Field Hockey Avenges Loss to Randolph-Macon, Moves on to ODAC Semifinals

ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 5 seeded Bridgewater College field hockey team avenged its loss earlier this season to Randolph-Macon as it took down the No. 4 seeded Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday night.

THE BASICS
Final Score: No. 5 seed Bridgewater 1, No. 4 seed Randolph-Macon 0
Records: Bridgewater 8-8; Randolph-Macon 11-7

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater dominated the action in the first quarter as it controlled possession in its offensive end for a majority of the opening 15 minutes. The Eagles recorded five total penalty corners but could not find the back of the cage. Carynn Klingler recorded the first shot on goal for BC that was stopped by a Yellow Jacket defender. The best chance for the Eagles in the opening quarter came on a shot from Kylie Amberger right in front of the cage, but once again an RMC defender was there to keep it away as the period came to an end with no score.
  • Bridgewater broke the scoreless draw six minutes into the second quarter as Amora Marchand scored her second goal of the season off an assist by Daphne Daymude. The Eagles maintained its offensive pressure with another shot by Daymude that was blocked after another penalty corner earned by BC. The first half came to an end with the Eagles still in front, 1-0.
  • In the second half, Klingler got a shot on cage early in the third quarter that was kicked away by the RMC goalie to keep the score at 1-0. Bridgewater kept possession for most of the third, but the quarter came to an end with BC still in front 1-0.
  • Randolph-Macon got its first shot attempt of the game with under eight minutes left in the game on a shot by Caitlin Porter that went wide of the goal. The rest of the fourth quarter saw both teams exchanging possessions in their offensive ends but neither side could get a solid attempt on the cage.
GAME STATS
  • Marchand was the lone goal scorer in the contest, while Daymude also got a point with an assist on the game-winning score.
  • Klingler led the team with four shots, while Daymude had three and Amberger and Marchand each had one.
  • Madalyn Miller played all 60 minutes in goal and did not face a shot. Meanwhile, Valentina Ambrogi-Torres made four saves out of the four shots that she faced.
  • Bridgewater held a large 8-0 edge in penalty corners with five of those coming in the first quarter alone.
  • The Eagles get retribution on a 2-1 loss at Randolph-Macon from earlier this season where the Yellow Jackets outlasted BC through two overtimes and won in a penalty shootout.
  • This marks the first time the Eagles have advanced to the ODAC Tournament Semifinals since the 2016 season, which was the year after the Eagles claimed the ODAC Championship.
