BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College athletic department mourns the loss of former student-athlete, professor, athletic director, Hall of Famer and head baseball coach Dr. James "Jim" Reedy '61 who passed away earlier this week.
Reedy graduated from Bridgewater as one of the most prolific point scorers in the men's basketball team's history. He won the Mason-Dixon Conference scoring title in three of his four seasons with the Eagles and was a First Team All Mason-Dixon pick and All-Little Eight selection each of those years. He was named Virginia Sportswriters and Sportscasters College Division Player of the Year and an honorable mention Little All-American following a stellar junior campaign before reaching the 2,000 career points mark as a senior. He was just the sixth player in Virginia to reach the 2,000-point plateau and still ranks as the second-leading scorer in BC's history. Reedy also spent a year on the tennis and baseball teams as a student-athlete.
Following graduation, Reedy was a teacher at Georgia Tech from 1961-66 where he also coached basketball and baseball before coming back to the College as an associate professor in 1968. He held roles of director of athletics and director of physical education upon his return through 1978. In addition, Reedy was the head baseball coach from 1967-71 and again from 1974-78. In his final season as the head coach in 1978, he guided the Eagles to a 17-7 record and the first ODAC Championship in program history. He earned ODAC Coach of the Year and saw Larry French '80 earn a spot on the First Team All-ODAC listing.
Throughout his BC coaching career, Reedy saw three first-team All-ODAC selections, including French, and coached Jeff Gianakos '77 to All-America honors in 1975, which was the first All-American in team history. He coached the team to over 80 victories in his tenure.
After leaving Bridgewater in 1978, he went back to Georgia Tech where he served as the department head and professor of health and performance sciences from 1990-96.
He was inducted into the Bridgewater Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
Also an accomplished author, Reedy published three novels over the course of his career, including
Tucker's Angels and
Blue Fog Mountain: The Enlightenment of a Mama's Boy.
