BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Four Bridgewater College senior football players recorded touchdowns on Senior Day in a 47-15 victory against Guilford in the regular season finale at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles finish the regular season with a 7-3 record behind a 5-2 record in ODAC play. Bridgewater takes third place in the ODAC, which means the team will travel for a bowl game as part of the Chesapeake Challenge. The Eagles are set to face Wilkes, which was the No. 2 team in the Landmark Conference, on Saturday, November 18, at 12 pm. Meanwhile, the Quakers' season comes to an end at 2-8 with an 0-8 mark in league play.Â
The action started quickly for the Eagles as
Jamel Johnson hauled in his first career touchdown catch on his Senior Day on a 19-yard connection from fifth-year
Malcolm Anderson to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. The defense forced a three-and-out on the following drive and scored again on a two-yard carry by Anderson. The drive was helped by a long 34-yard catch-and-run by
Ian Browne to give BC field position inside the Guilford 10-yard line. The Eagles went ahead 14-0 with 7:39 left in the opening quarter.Â
Both sides went three-and-out to give Guilford possession on its own 31-yard line when Bailey Baker found JuJu Rice for a touchdown on a quick, one-play drive to cut the deficit in half, 14-7 with just under five to go in the first.Â
A length 12-play drive led to a three-yard touchdown run by
Kennedy Fauntleroy to move the score to 21-7 after the Eagles moved the ball 67 yards in nearly six minutes with 14:05 left in the half.Â
The two sides alternated possessions before the Eagles took over with 7:25 to go in the first half and into scoring territory.
Jack Hendren booted a 30-yarder to increase the lead to 24-7 with under five minutes on the clock. After a quick three-and-out and a BC timeout, Anderson connected on three-straight passes before Fauntleroy bounced out for 10 yards on consecutive plays and find the end zone as Bridgewater went up 31-7. Both sides threw interceptions on back-to-back plays as the half came to a close with the Eagles up 31-7.
in the second half, Bridgewater moved down the field before a 24-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Quakers. GC took over possession and took a nine-play drive down field that ended with an eight-yard touchdown catch by Jay Daniels. A two-point conversion was true and the score went to 31-15 in favor of the Eagles.
Bridgewater added a field goal from 23 yards away to make the score 34-15 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter started with a 38-yard interception by
Shawn Harris as the fifth-year jumped a route on a pass and found pay dirt to give the Eagles a 40-15 edge.Â
Midway through the final quarter of regulation, the Eagles found the end zone again as
Derrick Jenkins hauled in a TD on his final game at the Jopson Athletic Complex from 17 yards away on a pass by senior
Jaylen Wood. The PAT from Hendren was good and the score went to 47-15, which stayed until the clock hit zeros.Â
Anderson led the team with 134 passing yards with a touchdown, while Wood also threw a touchdown pass in the win.
On the ground, Fauntleroy carried the ball 27 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Anderson pitched in 45 yards and a score as well. Wood finished with 39 yards on the ground and
Bradey Loder pitched in 29 yards as well.
Browne led all receivers with five catches for 71 yards, while
Tyler Gilliam hauled in three grabs for 25 yards. Johnson and Jenkins each had receiving touchdowns in the win.
Aaron Moore and
Aaron Nice each finished with five tackles, while Nice had 3.5 TFLs including 2.0 sacks. Moore tallied 1.0 sack, a forced fumble and a pass break, as well.
Zach Koller also had five tackles to tie for the team lead, while
TJ Lowery and
Samuel Adkins each had four stops.
Shawn Harris had one tackle and the 38-yard pick six, while
Val West added two stops and an interception.Â
The Eagles will play one more game as they head to Wilkes as part of the Chesapeake Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 18, with kickoff set for 12 pm.
