BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bridgewater College men's track & field thrower
Mike Smith garnered All-America honors in the first day of the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday afternoon.
Smith, the Waynesboro, Virginia native, recorded a mark of 19.11 meters (62' 8.50") in the prelims to shatter his own school record in the weight throw, which was 18.76 meters (61' 6.75"). The number allowed him to advance to the finals of the event.
In the finals, Smith broke his school record yet again as his final heave of the day went 19.13 meters (62' 9.25") notching a fourth-place finish.
Joseph White of Carthage tossed 21.41 meters (70' 3.00") to win the national championship, while Alex Kristeller of Widener took second with a best mark of 20.55 meters. Fellow ODAC competitor John Kindig of Shenandoah earned bronze with a top mark of 19.66 meters (64' 6.00").
With the top-four finish in the event, Smith claims All-America honors for the first time in his career.
