McLean Becomes Eagles' All-Time Points Leader in Regular Season Finale

ASHLAND, Va. -- Connor McLean finished with a pair of assists to take over as the all-time points leader in Bridgewater College men's lacrosse history as the Eagles lost 21-8 at Randolph-Macon in their regular season finale on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Avery Tankersley tallied a pair of goals to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage with five minutes to go in the first quarter. Luke Wendler halved the lead with a score at the 4:36 mark of the period, but R-MC added two quick strikes just 30 seconds apart to assume a 4-1 lead. Gysbertus Metten got the Eagles within two to close out the opening 15 minutes trailing 4-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on a tear through the middle two quarters as they blanked the Eagles in the second and third. The home side outscored BC 12-0 and went into the final quarter with a 16-2 lead.
  • Josh Goodwin got the Eagles going again in the fourth with a goal just two and a half minutes into the frame. An Austin Payne score from R-MC led to another strike from Metten but it was erased by a Yellow Jacket goal. Grant Nyland got on the board before Trevor McClelland got an assist from Connor McLean for a score. Nyland added to the scoring run with his second goal befoe Bubba Bowen went back-to-back from the home team. Nyland completed his fourth-quarter hat trick after a pass into space from McLean to make it 20-8. Randolph-Macon found the back of the net once more with just a minute to play to set the scoreline to 21-8.
GAME STATS
  • McLean passed Eric Husselbaugh (218; 2018-21) for most career points in team history and also resets his own single-season assists record as he now stands at 43 for the year. Last season, McLean set the record with 42 helpers and now owns three of  the top 10 single-season assists totals. His 122 assists ranks among the ODAC's all-time career leaders, as well. 
  • Nyland led the way with three goals, while Metten also had two scores, 
  • Wendler, Goodwin and McClelland also scored in the loss.
  • Ryan Addison led the team with three caused turnovers and also snatched up a pair of ground balls. Eddie Ross IV caused a pair of turnovers, as well. 
  • Samuel Sharps went 9-of-16 in face offs with four ground balls, while Gabriel Alexander won six of his attempts with four ground balls.
  • Ryan Linn had one CT and three ground balls and Goodwin, Hayden Gourley and Tyler Carney all had a pair of ground balls.
  • Carney made 12 saves in the loss, while Owen Gucwa made four stops as Harris Archer entered for the final three minutes but did not face a shot. 
  • Randolph-Macon outshot the Eagles 58-33 and saw a 41-25 advantage in ground balls. 
  • Each team was 0-for-2 in extra-man opportunities. 
UP NEXT
Bridgewater has secured the No. 6 seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament, which means for the second year in a row, the Eagles will host the No. 7 seed, Shenandoah, in the first round of the league's postseason. The game is set for 11 am at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 30.
