Men's Soccer Opens Season with Victory over Regent

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory to open the season on Friday night over Regent.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 1, Regent 0
Records: Bridgewater 1-0-0, Regent 2-1-0

How It Happened
  • The Eagles opened the contest on the attack right away with multiple early runs. Riley Queen was the first player to fire a shot on frame, but a save by Connor Henriques kept the game knotted and gave the Eagles a corner kick. Off the corner, Trey Widrick fired a shot on net and again Henriques turned it aside for Regent.
  • BC continued to apply pressure, but Henriques time and time again made the saves to keep the game scoreless with six saves midway through the first half. The Eagles finally ended the save streak as Lestath Savage started a run giving it up to Luis Orduna just outside of the box. Orduna found Savage just off the left post and the Eagles' leading scorer from a year ago buried it to get BC on the board 1-0 in the 37th minute.
  • Regent made an adjustment in the closing minutes of the half, and it paid off with a corner kick opportunity but could not muster a shot.
  • Regent kept the momentum rolling and applied some early pressure in the opening minutes of the second frame, but still failed to get a shot off after the Eagles back line held strong and forced multiple turnovers.
  • The Eagles had chances all throughout the opening and middle stages of the second half but could not find the back of the net. Regent got a corner kick with seven minutes to go in regulation, but Charles Schweinefuss broke threw the wall and snagged the crossing pass to stifle the offensive chance.

Match Notes
  • Savage was the only player to find the back of the net on either side with his only shot on net.
  • Gavin Kast led the way with six total shots and was one of three Eagles to fire multiple shots on goal.
  • Henriques made eight saves for the Royals to keep the game at a one goal difference.
  • Bridgewater out shot Regent 27-0 in total and 9-0 in shots on goal.
  • This is the first time in over 10 years the Eagles have not allowed a single shot in a game. The lowest total during that span was three on Sept. 9, 2013 in a 2-1 win over Southern Virginia.
