Women's Soccer Shuts Out Salisbury

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team grabbed its first shutout victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Salisbury on Sunday.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 1, Salisbury 0
Records: Bridgewater 4-2-0, Salisbury 4-2-1

How it Happened
  • The Eagles got the offense going right from the whistle as Skyler Daum rifled a shot on net and Riley Pinato made the stop. Laura Narby got an attempt on net in the early going for BC as well that Pinato made the initial stop on, but the rebound was free by virtue of the slick conditions. The Sea Gulls were able to clear and flipped the field with their first opportunity off of the foot of Tori Pietuszka that Carlee Gaboury scooped up to keep the game scoreless.
  • BC threatened in the ninth minute as Lyric Birkley fired a shot just outside the box that nailed a Salisbury defender and deflected out of play resulting in a BC corner kick. Alicia Keo took the attempt from the far side and sent a ball in just off the goal line into heavy traffic. Kendall Garza had an initial chance at it but the ball found its way to Birkley and the ODAC's leading scorer buried it to make it 1-0 for the home side. The Ohio native had another chance just seconds later as she forced a turnover deep in the SU defensive end, but this time Pinato stepped up to make the save.
  • Daum, Garza and Keo all got shots off for BC in a quick exchange in the 12th minute but none of them found the net. Salisbury flipped the momentum with multiple chances and finally registered a shot on goal but again Gaboury made the stop. The two sides traded chances down the stretch with Salisbury putting a shot on goal that Gaboury stopped in the final minute of the first half.
  • The Sea Gulls made adjustments at the intermission and took the momentum with a pair of chances right out of the break but no shots to show for it. Narby had the only early shot for BC but her coast-to-coast run was spoiled as her shot sailed wide of the cage.
  • Around the 58th minute the intensity ramped up another level and a few moments later Salisbury had a good look out of a corner kick, but the shot was spoiled by a Bridgewater defender. The 72nd minute saw Salisbury with another corner kick opportunity. The attempt curled into the box and Rebecca Fairbanks rifled a shot from point blank, but Gaboury dove and made a spectacular stop with her left hand pushing the ball just wide of the goal and out of play. The Sea Gulls had three more consecutive corner kicks but failed to muster a shot as the Bridgewater back line battled to fight off the chances. Fairbanks had another chance for Salisbury on a free kick from just outside the box, but the keeper made the save once more to keep Bridgewater in front. The Eagles started to maintain possession some during the final three minutes and even had a final run as time expired but unselfishly Allison Quick dribbled it into the corner to run the clock out and give the Eagles the victory.

Match Notes
  • Birkley scored for the fourth time in as many games for the Eagles. The sophomore's 12 points currently leads the ODAC.
  • Daum and Birkley led all players with four total shots while Birkley and Fairbnaks were the only players to register multiple shots on goal.
  • Gaboury made five saves on the day including two key stops during the second half to keep the Eagles in front and give BC their first shutout of the season.
  • Bridgewater won the shot battle 15-13 but only registered two during the second half with neither of those chances finding the target.
