Ford, Freeman and Garcia set Career-Highs in Win over Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team took down Averett 71-47 thanks to three players setting new career-high marks.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 71; Averett 47
Records: Bridgewater 9-3 (5-1 ODAC); Averett 4-11 (2-6 ODAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Averett opened the game knocking down three free throws to charge in front until Kayla Ford drained a three-pointer to even the score. After getting the assist on the opening bucket, Riley Corcoran tallied another as she found Jaden Alsberry on the low block. The Cougars responded to knot the game before BC went on an 8-0 run highlighted by another Ford long-range make that turned into a rare four-point play. Averett closed back in with a 6-3 run over the final three minutes of the frame to make it 16-11 in favor of BC after 10 minutes of play.
  • The Cougars pulled to within a point with a 4-0 run to open the second quarter before Abby Freeman and Rosemary Pierson got the Bridgewater offense rolling. The duo accounted for all of a 9-0 BC run to blow the game open and put the Eagles in front by 10. Averett got back on the board, but a layup from Alsberry combined with a Regan Maynard make at the charity stripe and another Pierson long ball made it 31-17 for BC. The Cougars were able to slowly creep back closer with a 7-5 run over the final three minutes and change of the half with BC in front 36-24.
  • BC opened the fourth quarter on a tear. The Eagles went on an 8-1 run over the opening 3:30 of the frame led by four points from Alsberry. Averett got on the board with three straight points before an 8-0 run for the Eagles with contributions from four different scorers to go ahead 52-28 with just north of two minutes remaining in the quarter. Averett was able to close the period on a 5-0 run to make it 52-33 heading to the final 10 minutes.
  • Alexis Edmonds and Jay Garcia got the BC offense rolling in the fourth, but a 9-2 AU scoring spree pulled the home side back to within 15 nearing the midway mark of the period. Bridgewater replied with five quick ones capped off by a Corcoran hook shot pushed the lead back out to 20. The two sides traded buckets before Garcia laid it in at the cup to make it 66-44 with two minutes to go. Averett was able to put up a bucket and a free throw before Garcia, Freeman and Corcoran combined for a 5-0 for the Eagles to seal the game.
MATCH NOTES
  • Freeman tied her career-high with 20 points in the win. Alsberry added 11 and Pierson accounted for 10.
  • Talia Prosper led Averett with 15 points and grabbed four rebounds.
  • Three different Eagles set career highs in the win. Ford scored a career-best nine points while Freeman set new bests in rebounds, steals and free throws made. Garcia's 15 rebounds are a career-high and the most rebounds for an Eagle since Alsberry grabbed 18 in a win over Lynchburg during the 2021-22 season.
