Field Hockey Secures Shutout Over Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater field hockey notched a 3-0 final score at the Stadium of Jopson Athletic Complex against Virginia Wesleyan on senior day Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Virginia Wesleyan (VWU) 0

Records: BCE (10-4-1 Overall, 4-2 Conf.), VWU (12-3 Overall, 4-2 Conf.)

How It Happened

  • Both teams would start off very even switching attacking sides quickly. A great save by Ashley Nau prevented the opening point for the Marlins and the score stayed at zero after the first quarter.

  • Then, more of the same in the first quarter played out in the second, with consistent strikes to the attacking circle, searching for an opening chance in the game. Aggressive play sparked a green card late in the quarter by VWU, but again the score remained 0-0.

  • In the third quarter, the Eagles found their rhythm off a penalty corner. Emily Tyler would get on top of the play, as Tyler released a lasering shot to the backboard for the opening goal of the game. Soon after, BCE followed that up as the defense launched the ball down field for an open Lindsay Davis as Davis unleashed a slick delivery feed inside the crease for Kyle Amberger, and Amberger wound back to launch a strong shot past the diving goalie for the 2-0 score.

  • More aggressive play occurred in the fourth quarter as VWU received a yellow card five minutes into the quarter. Quickly after the yellow expired, BCE would come back for more action in the attacking circle as Davis found the back of the goal off a quick pass from Amberger. The final score stayed 3-0 giving the seniors a hard-fought victory on senior day.

Game Notes

  • Bridgewater forced 10 penalty corners with two successful conversions.

  • VWU had 60 fouls called against it with 36 just in the first half to BCE's 38 total fouls called.

  • An honoree on senior day, Lindsay Davis, certainly put the cherry on top for the seniors with a goal and an assist; a season high.

  • Also, senior Emily Tyler scored her fifth goal of the season.
