BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College field hockey took a 2-0 victory over Sweet Briar at home for the regular season finale Friday night.
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 2, Sweet Briar (SBC) 0
Records: BCE (11-5 Overall, 5-3 Conf.), SBC (6-11 Overall, 1-7 Conf.)
How It Happened
-
The Eagles put the restraints on the Vixens throughout the first quarter not letting up a shot. BCE would get an early scoring chance a minute into regulation off a penalty corner, but would come up short as SBC cleared it out. Four more penalty corners would come Bridgewater's way; however, the score stayed at zero after the first.
-
Then in the second quarter, the Eagles got it going early to break the score open. With two minutes into the quarter, Lexi Francis laced a shot that hit all board off the quick pass by Carynn Klingler. Bridgewater stayed aggressive throughout the first half forcing four more penalty corners and two close shots on goal. The score remained 1-0.
-
As the second half rolled on, Sweet Briar had a scoring chance halfway in the third quarter with a penalty stroke in the circle, but BCE's goalkeeper Madalyn Miller stopped it in its tracks. The Vixens had nothing else to show for it offensively as the strong blockade in the defense managed to cut out any loose balls in their half.
-
Soon after, the fourth quarter stayed in BCE's control with a second goal. With five minutes to go in the game, the Eagles continued to step on the gas as Rylie Flick released a fiery shot on goal to seep past the goalie's reach for the second goal of the game. Sweet Briar had nothing else in the tank and were stopped for the last five minutes. The final score would be 2-0 Eagles.
Game Notes
-
Strong defensive pressure came from Bridgewater's side, only allowing three shots the entire game. Offensively, The Eagles ripped 31 shots with 11 just in the fourth quarter and 17 on goal.
-
The goalkeeping duo in junior Madalyn Miller and sophomore Ashley Nau have had five shutouts in a row when resulting in a win and their eighth total shutout this season.
