BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's basketball team fell to Southern Virginia 76-65 on Saturday in the program's first game of the Carlyle Whitelow Invitational.

How It Happened
- Bridgewater opened the game on a 5-0 run with a long ball from Jordan Cooper and a floater from Aaron Oates. The Knights replied with an 11-0 run to not only get on the board, but storm in front thanks to a trio of three-pointers. BC ended the run with a Cooper bucket and flipped the script a touch with a 7-2 scoring spree for the Eagles to draw within a point. SVU ended the run, but a three-pointer from Maleek Richardson knotted the game at 15-15 with 8:29 to go in the half.
- Bridgewater took the lead on a Khalil Ward dunk and held the lead at 19-17 as well after a trade of scores, but the Knights locked in over the last 5:39 of the half and went on a 12-4 scoring run highlighted by six from Tyler Kartchner to make it 31-23 for the Knights at the half.
- BC outscored the Knights 6-3 out of the intermission thanks to scores from Cooper and Oates, but the Knights quickly stretched the lead to double figures at 39-29. The advantage hoovered around the 10-point mark for much of the period as the teams traded scores and the Knights stretched the advantage out to as much as 18 with 3:52 to play.
- The Eagles got a timely three-pointer from Oates and he followed that up with a steal and a score to slice into the SVU lead. The Knights got a score on the next trip, but a 6-0 BC swing got the lead back to single digits at 72-63 with 1:43 to play. Bridgewater cut the lead down to eight with 32 seconds left, but free throws sealed the deal for SVU.
Match Notes
- Oates led all scorers with 20 points and did not miss a field goal in the second half on 6-for-6 shooting in the final 20 minutes. Cooper (11) and Ward (10) each crossed double figures as well for BC, while Richardson tallied a career-high of eight points in the loss.
- Kartchner's double-double (14 points/11 rebounds) led the way for SVU, while Tillman Johnson led the scoring for the Knights with 16 points.
- BC as edged out on the glass 41-29. SVU shot 47.5% from the floor compared to just 36.8% for the Eagles.
