Eagles Downed by Mary Washington

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team fell to Mary Washington, 14-10, on home field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMW wasted no time finding the back of the cage as Logan Cardwell scored less than 50 seconds into the contest before Dave Votapek doubled the lead to 2-0 at the 13:41 mark of the opening quarter. Gabriel Alexander won the ensuing faceoff and marched down field to score the Eagles' first of the game to make it a 2-1 game just seconds later. Cardwell notched his second of the game as a fast-paced opening minutes saw the visitors go up 3-1 with 12:26 left in the first period. Hayden Gourley kept the Eagles in it as he scored at the 8:52 mark of the quarter, but Mary Washington struck back with a pair of goals from Ethan Castleman and Cardwell to maintain a 5-2 edge. Bridgewater got one back as Aidan Bruehl scored as UMW led 5-3 after the first quarter.
  • After an offside call on the visitors gave the Eagles an extra-man opportunity, Drew Huber made it a one goal game with a man-up score as the penalty was expiring with 9:10 left in the half. The Eagles continued a comeback to tie the game at 5-5 as Grant Nyland netted a ball with 2:46 on the clock, but two quick goals from Mary Washington gave it a 7-5 lead at halftime.
  • Henry Moag scored his second straight goal off the opening faceoff in the third quarter to push the lead to 8-5, but a response from Bridgewater saw Trevor McClelland and Bruehl register three straight goals to tie the game back up at 8-8 and force Mary Washington to use an early timeout. Off the restart, UMW took the lead again as Jackson Popeck found the back of the cage with 7:32 left in the third to start a five-goal stretch for the visitors with Mary Washington leading 12-8 after 45 minutes.
  • The final goal of the five-goal run by UMW came two minutes in to the final quarter but Colby Smith scored during an extra-man opportunity off a great pass from Gourley to keep the Eagles close at 13-9. Riley Stewart recorded a goal with 8:14 left in regulation to make it a three-goal deficit. The comeback fell short as Mary Washington scored once more with 1:00 showing on the scoreboard to take the win, 14-10.

GAME STATS
  • Bruehl and McClelland led the scoring efforts for Bridgewater with two apiece, while Huber, Gourley, Alexander, Smith, Nyland and Stewart all scored once.
  • Huber paced the team in assists with two for a three-point day, while Gourley and Tyler Pinto added helpers in the loss. Huber also snagged five ground balls. 
  • Alexander went 15-for-23 in faceoffs and picked up 14 ground balls to go along with his goal.
  • Ryan Addison, Colin Chizmar, Jacob Mead and Gabe Wallman all had one caused turnover. 
  • Wallamn finished with 14 saves on 28 shots faced, while Wyatt Martin made five saves on the 15 shots he faced in all 60 minutes for UMW.
  • Mary Washington outshot Bridgewater 54-27 and picked up 46 ground balls compared to 39 for the Eagles.
  • Bridgewater finished 3-of-4 in extra-man opportunites and limited the visitors to 0-for-4 with a man up.
  • UMW was perfect in clears at 18-for-18 compared to BC's 23 clears in 29 attempts.
