Baseball Powers Past Cabrini

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Bridgewater College baseball team kicked off its spring break trip down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. defeating Cabrini in two seven inning games 6-2 and 20-18.

THE BASICS

Final Score: (Game one) Bridgewater 6, Cabrini 2; (Game two) Bridgewater 20, Cabrini 18
Records: Bridgewater 8-3, Cabrini 4-3

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One
  • Bridgewater did not get much going in the top of the first going down in order. Cabrini opened the game with a double to center field. A triple from the Cavaliers brought the runner home from second to score the first run of the ballgame. A wild pitch brought in another run for Cabrini to go up 2-0 early. Joe Christopher induced a pop up to the first baseman to get out of the inning.
  • The Eagles wasted no time getting right back to work in the top of the second inning. Tristan Gordon led off the inning doubling to right field. Nick Dawson stepped up to the plate and delivered a home run to left field to knot the game up 2-2. Jonathan Sexton issued a double to left field, but BC was unable to score anymore runs.
  • With two outs on the scoreboard, Jeffrey Snider gave Bridgewater the lead, in the top of the third, hitting a solo shot to left field.
  • Bridgewater continued its scoring in the top of the fourth with Dawson drawing a lead-off walk to start the inning. Sexton moved the runner up on a ground ball to the third baseman. Luke Tomajczyk planted a single in left field scoring Dawson to go up 4-2.
  • Nick Stavros dropped in a double to right field in the top of the fifth then advanced to third on wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Lucas Bauer picked up a sacrifice fly hitting the ball deep enough for Stavros to tag up.
  • Christopher continued to dominate halting the Cabrini offense with effective work on the mound. In the top of the seventh, Tomajcyzk pick up his second hit of the game with a single to right field. Stavros replicated his teammate's at-bat dropping in another single to the right fielder. Isaac Sumpter picked up an RBI singling to center field to plate Kyle Carlson who was on second.
  • Spencer Lloyd came in for Joe Christopher in the bottom of the seventh and was able to pick up the save with BC winning 6-2.
GAME STATS
  • Dawson recorded his first home run of his collegiate career and had an impressive day at the plate going 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk.
  • Snider also picked up a home run and currently leads the team with three in the early season.
  • Gordon, Sexton and Stavros each recorded a double in the game.
  • Christopher picked up the win in 6.0 innings of work giving up three hits, two runs while having four strikeouts. Lloyd was awarded the save.
Game Two
  • The Cavaliers began the second game the same way that they did in the first. The offense started the game singling to center field then a hit by pitch moved the runner into scoring position. A single from Jaden Dickerson scored the runner from second. Bridgewater used its defense to get out the inning registering a triple play on a line out to second base.
  • Christian Harris used patience to secure a lead off walk in the bottom of the first then turned to speed to take second base. Gordon, with an RBI opportunity, delivered a single to center field to knot the score at 1-1.
  • Cabrini took the lead back in the top of the second inning. With runners on first and second, Jacob Roberts dropped in a single to left field to take the lead 2-1. The Eagles got out of the inning with interference being called.
  • Back-to-back walks by Sexton and Sumpter started the bottom of the second inning. The Cavaliers' pitcher was able to pick off Sexton at second base to record one out. Tomajczyk stepped to the plate drawing the third walk of the inning and put a runner back in scoring position. Stavros loaded the bases drawing the fourth walk. Christian Harris did not waste his opportunity reaching first base on a single to left field scoring Sumpter. Snider repeated with another single to left to put BC back on top 4-2.
  • Cabrini responded in a big way in the top of the fourth inning when Zack Brook singled to center field. A costly walk followed then a miscue at first base allowed for Roberts to clear the bases and put the Cavaliers ahead 5-4. Two more runners came across home on wild pitches. Brook reached base again with another single to center field picking up two more RBIs. Another error from Bridgewater plated the final run of the inning to give Cabrini the lead 11-4.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Christian Harris sprinted to third base and drove in a run in the process. Gordon flied out to the center fielder bring Christian Harris home from third base. TJ Johnson hit a two-run home run to put the Eagles within striking distance 11-8.
  • The Cavaliers did not back down having another long inning in their half of the fifth. Errors continued to plague the BC defense with the first runner scoring on one. A walked batter then a fielder's choice plated two more runs for Cabrini. The final two runs of the inning were scored off errors giving the Cavaliers an 18-8 advantage.
  • Bridgewater mounted a monumental comeback in the bottom of the sixth with Snider taking first after a hit by pitch. Gordon and pinch hitter Eli Pratt drew walks to load the bases. Sexton had a huge at-bat doubling to right field bringing home two runners. Chandler Valbak came in to hit for Sumpter and dropped in a triple to right field to plate two more runs. Christian Harris continued to produce big at-bats doubling to right field to put BC within four 18-14. Snider followed it up with a double of his own to score another run. Jake Harris was walked to drive in another run which was followed up by Dawson getting hit by a pitch to plate another. Back-to-back singles from Sexton and Tomajczyk gave Bridgewater a football-like lead of 20-18.
  • The Eagles decided to bring in Brett Midkiff to close out the game and he was able to retire the side to give BC the win 20-18.
GAME STATS
  • Christian Harris led the offense going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBIs and a walk.
  • Valbak and Christian Harris each recorded a three bagger in the game.
  • Cole Keel was awarded the win going 1.0 inning.
  • Midkiff recorded his third save of the early season going 1.0 inning and recording a strikeout.
