HOW IT HAPPENED
  • India Dailey got BC on the board first as she knocked down a mid-range jumper off a feed from Abby Freeman. The Yellow Jackets knocked down a three-pointer on the ensuing trip, but Dailey found Jaden Alsberry for a layup to wrestle the lead back. Freeman knocked down a jumper to extend the lead before RMC evened the game with another make from outside. It was another 5:30 before someone found nylon as the two sides combined for a 0-for-12 effort from the floor before Jane Elkins made a free throw to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the day at 7-6. Jay Garcia drained a turn-around jumper and Rosemary Pierson drilled a shot from long range to make it 11-10 Eagles after a quarter.
  • Aylin Humpherys got the Eagles offense going to start the second as her floater touched nothing but the net. RMC scored five-quick points to take a short-lived 15-13 lead and Kayla Ford knocked down a three-pointer to push BC back in front. Randolph-Macon tied the game with a make at the line before Riley Corcoran made a pair at the free-throw line. Corcoran found Alsberry to give the Eagles a 20-16 lead with 3:17 to go in the half. RMC put together another 5-0 run to take the lead back and again BC responded with a make from Deep as Pierson struck again. The junior forced a turnover and scored a layup to extend the lead. Sam Smith knocked down a three-pointer to pull the Yellow Jackets to within a point, 25-24, at the break.
  • Each side traded makes out of the intermission, but RMC surged ahead on the back of a 12-2 run to take a 36-27 lead with 4:01 to play in the third quarter. It was at this point that the game flipped on its head. Jay Garcia scored on a second-chance opportunity to end the RMC run and followed with a turnaround jumper in the paint to make it 36-31 with 2:16 left in the frame. Pierson made a pair at the charity stripe and Humpherys made a jumper to bring the Eagles back to within one. Pierson continued to fuel the offense as she found Freeman open beyond the arc to give the Eagles the lead at 38-36 heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Bridgewater did not slow down. Alsberry and Freeman executed back-to-back old-school three-point plays to make it a 44-36 game and another Alsberry bucket made it a 10-point game. Pierson and Humpherys continued to pour it on with consecutive three-pointers followed by an Alsberry bucket off a dish from Pierson. Corcoran drained a three-pointer to conclude a 30-0 BC run with the Eagles now in front 57-36 with 2:49 to play. RMC finally got back on the score board, ending a 10:53 long scoring drought. BC held the Yellow Jackets to 0-for12 from the floor during the stretch and forced eight RMC turnovers. Randolph-Macon closed the game on a 9-4 run to make it a 15-point game at the horn, but the huge run proved to be enough.
MATCH NOTES
  • Pierson led BC with 13 points in the win on 4-of-6 shooting and three makes from deep. The junior also dished out three assists and grabbed a pair of rebounds as she turned in a +21 plus/minutes when she was on the floor.
  • Elkins led RMC with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Smith grabbed seven rebounds and dished seven assists in the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Bridgewater completely flipped the script from the meeting earlier this season. RMC had doubled the Eagles in the fourth quarter in the last two meetings, but this time around Bridgewater outscored the Yellow Jackets 23-9 in the final frame thanks to a 53.3% shooting effort in the final stanza.
  • BC's seven makes from deep is the most for the squad this season and just one shy of the most during coach Flamini's time in the valley. Bridgewater shot 33.3% from beyond the arc compared to just a 23.1% mark on the campaign. Pierson's three makes from deep is also the most by an Eagle this season.
