FARMVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's tennis team fell to Hampden-Sydney 8-1 on Friday afternoon.
HSC picked up two of the three doubles points, but not without resistance.
Noah Hughes and
Matthew Leonard got the Eagles on the board with a 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot.
Corey Beshoar and
Bryce Cline put up a good fight at the No. 3 spot before falling 5-8.
The Eagles did not go down quietly. The Tigers cruised to wins at the top two spots, but the bottom two thirds of BC's ladder kept digging. Beshoar was stuck in a tight opening set where he dropped the tiebreak before flipping the script and grabbing the second set 6-1and forcing a third set tiebreak at the No. 2 slot. The rookie fended off a match point in the breaker before falling 10-12.
Hughes and Cline each had a similar match as the pair dropped the opening frame at the No. 5 and No. 6 spot respectively. The senior each battled back and won the second set sending the matches the full distance. Hughes was forced to play a full third set as the team match had not been decided and it did not disappoint as it went all the way to a third set tiebreak before the Tigers prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2). Cline played a 10-point tiebreak as the team match had been decided as he fell 4-6, 7-5, 7-10.
The Eagles are back at it on March 26 as both teams host Shenandoah.
