BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's team defeated Randolph-Macon in Thrilling fashion on Senior Day.
Prior to the start of the match, the program honored its four graduating members,
Nicholas Arnold,
Bryce Cline,
Gabe Elder and
Noah Hughes.
The Eagles opened up with a quick 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles from Cline and
Corey Beshoar to jump ahead 1-0 before a RMC win at the top spot evened things up. Hughes and
Matthew Leonard were locked in a battle at the No. 2 spot and led at 6-4 before having their back to the wall at 6-7. The duo regrouped to force a tiebreak where neither side could get much separation before the Eagles went on a short run and capitalized on the second of two match points at 8-7(5) to take a 2-1 edge in the match score.
Elder set the toe early with a crisp 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot to make it 3-1 BC. The Yellow Jackets kept the hope of a comeback alive with wins at the top two spots, but Hughes swung the momentum back in the Eagles favor with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 5 slot.
Cline would have the chance to clinch the match on senior day. The senior won the opening set 6-3 thanks to three-straight games late and did not look back as he went ahead 5-2 in the second. Cline served for the match, but was broken before a gritty return game and a double fault on match point gave him the win at 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 to seal the deal. Beshoar polished off the victory as he faced adversity in both sets as lae service breaks led him to a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 slot.
The Eagles march on and look to keep their postseason hopes alive as they travel to Randolph tomorrow. Action is set to start at 2 p.m. in Lynchburg.
