FARMVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team finished out its regular season splitting a pair of games with Hampden-Sydney winning the first game 5-3 and dropping the second 10-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
- The first four innings elapsed scoreless, but the Eagles started the scoring in the top of the fifth inning. Isaac Sumpter led the inning off with a single to left center field, then moved to third base after a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt from Christian Harris. Jeffrey Snider drove Sumpter home after hitting an infield single to first base to make it 1-0. Brandan Hartman drew a walk to put runners in scoring position, but Ashton Smith cleared the bases with a deep shot over the left center field wall to increase the lead to 4-0.
- The Tigers started a run in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Moore knocked a single to left field to start the inning off. A fielder's choice put runners on first in third, then Jaxon Masterson brought the first run home hitting a single to left center. A was followed by the next batter to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
- BC's offense threatened H-SC in the top of the eighth with Nick Dawson laying down a bunt single. Sumpter used the small ball tactic as well leading to another single and have runners on first and third. Christian Harris drew a walk to load the bases for Bridgewater, but Hampden-Sydney stopped the attack by getting the next two outs.
- Lucas Bauer came to the plate in the top of the ninth with two outs on the scoreboard and tallied a triple to right center field. Bauer capitalized on the pitcher's mistake adding an insurance run scoring on a wild pitch.
- Nick Harris closed out the game picking up his fourth save of the year after a 5-3 Eagles' victory.
GAME STATS
- Bauer elevated the offense going 4-for-5 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Sumpter also had an effective day at the dish going 3-for-4 and scoring a run.
- Smith secured his fifth home run of the season after knocking one over in the top of the fifth for three RBIs.
- Joe Christopher notched his fourth win of the season after 5.2 innings pitched allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits and striking out two. Andrew Baugher and Nick Harris each pitched in relief for BC combining for just four hits between the two.
- Jacob Miler-Bopp took the loss with 6.0 innings giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits.
Game Two
- Bridgewater began the game with a two-out rally after Hartman struck a double to left center to be in scoring position. Jonathan Sexton took a hit by pitch to follow up the at-bat, then Sumpter dropped a single into right field to load the bases. The rally ended after the Tigers got a strike out for the final out of the inning.
- H-SC started its offense early picking up two runs in the bottom of the first. Masterson singled to right field then was advanced to third after a double from Julian Franks-Pollock. A fly out from Christian Lancaster scored the first run of the game then was followed up by a single to right field to make it 2-0.
- Christian Harris began the top of the second drawing a walk then moved into scoring position after stealing a base. Dawson recorded a ground out to the short stop that brought Harris home cutting the lead to 2-1.
- Hampden-Sydney pounced for mor offense in the bottom of the third when Lancaster single to right field to bring a runner home from third. Another run came across after Trey Shrock followed it up with a single of his own to the opposite side giving the Tigers a 4-1 advantage.
- The bottom of the fourth saw H-SC plate four more runs starting first when, with the bases loaded, Jack Wilson took a hit by pitch to bring home a runner. A costly wild pitch from the Eagles plated the second run for Hampden-Sydney. Lancaster followed it up with a two RBI double down the right field line to go up 8-1.
- The Tigers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth after Wilson drove a single down the right field line to score the runners from second and third.
- Smith started the top of the eighth taking a hit by pitch putting a runner on for BC. Christian Harris followed up the at-bat with a single through the right side advancing Smith to third. Dawson loaded up the bases for Tristan Gordon after drawing a walk. Gordon secured an RBI after taking the second hit by pitch of the inning to bring Smith home.
- Bridgewater tried for a comeback in the top of the ninth inning with Bauer drawing a walk then being advanced to third after a Hartman single to center field. Smith used a combination of strength and speed to plate two runs after knocking a triple to left field. Hampden-Sydney got the final out picking up a 10-4 victory.
GAME STATS
- Sumpter and Hartman each had two hits in the contest with one of Hartman's hits being a double.
- Smith recorded two RBIs in the game after hitting his first collegiate triple.
- Five of H-SC batters recorded multiple hits in game two.
- Reid Long was strapped with the loss going 3.0 innings giving up four runs (all earned) on six hits striking out three.
- Jake Williams got the start on the mound going 3.2 innings giving up one run (earned) on two hits and striking out two. Ryan Portes was given the win after being effective in relief going 1.2 innings giving up nothing and striking out one.
UP NEXT
The Eagles wrapped up the 2024 regular season and will now await their seeding for the 2024 ODAC Tournament beginning Friday, May 3.
