Volleyball Runs Win Streak to Six

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team continued their hot start with a straight-set victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday night.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater dropped the opening point off the match, but quickly flipped the switch by winning the next five points highlighted by a pair of service aces from Faith DePew. St. Mary's ended the run after an error by DePew and worked the match back even at 5-5. The Eagles slowly started to pull away and then exploded for another five-point run on Reagan Stoop's serve. A kill from Claire Griffith made it 14-7 before SMC tried to slow the momentum. The Seahawks closed back in to 15-11 before kills from DePew, Griffith and Brooklyn Williams stretched the advantage out to 19-11 for the hone team. SMC was able to trade point with the Eagles down the stretch, but a kill from DePew gave BC a one-set advantage at 25-17.
  • SMC hopped out to a 3-0 advantage to start the second frame an was able to stretch it out to a 9-3 lead before a kill from Stoop gave the BC offense life. Stoop went back to serve after the kill and fueled BC to draw back even at 9-9 by virtue of a pair of aces along with kills from Ashley Wise and Virginia Collins. St. Mary's stopped the run, but Bridgewater slowly pulled away as three-straight service aces from Collins pushed it to an 18-13 advantage for the home team. SMC got back on the board, but a few miscues combined with a kill by Stoop and an ace from Currie made it 22-13 in favor of BC. St. Mary's fended of a pair of set points, but a kill from Wise pushed it to a two-set lead for the Eagles at 25-16.
  • The Eagles jumped ahead to a 4-1 lead in the third set and did not look back. St. Mary's got he gap back to within a point at 5-4, but a run on the Collins serve set the tone as kills by Jillian Levin and Griffith pushed it to an 8-4 edge. The two sides traded points until another kill from Levin sent BC on a five-point swing to go ahead 14-6 thanks to some blocks up from anchored by Agnes Alford. BC kept the foot on the gas and SMC tried to keep up including defending a pair of match points, but a kill from Griffith off the set from Vivi Liquorie sealed the deal at 25-17.
Match Notes
  • Bridgewater had contributions from all across the stat sheet in the win as Stoop and Griffith led the team with six kills each. Seven different Eagles totaled multiple kills in the victory.
  • Stoop led the way on the back end with 11 digs for the Eagles. Currie added nine of her own in the effort. Allford and Williams also anchored the defensive game up front with four block assist each.
  • Kaleigh Wiseman totaled six kills for the Seahawks in the loss. Stella Marrero tallied 15 digs for SMC in the loss.
  • BC won it's sixth-straight contest on the back of some superb serving. BC tallied 11 service aces in the win and have now won 18 consecutive sets.
