Field Hockey Blanks Marlins on Homecoming

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team shut out Virginia Wesleyan 2-0 on Friday night during the homecoming festivities.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 2, Virginia Wesleyan 0

Records: Bridgewater 5-6 (2-1 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan 2-8 (0-1 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Virginia Wesleyan opened the game with a pair of chances early, but a save by Ashley Nau kept the game scoreless early. BC responded as Kylie Amberger had her shot blocked, but the home team kept pushing with multiple penalty corners down the stretch in the opening stanza. The Eagles got their first shot on target late in the frame as Maylynn Watson rifled a shot that was turned away to keep the contest tied 0-0 after the opening 15 minutes.

  • VWU had a pair of shots off a penalty corner in the period's opening minutes, but neither found their target. BC flipped the field and capitalized as a feed in from Watson found Amberger and she buried the shot in the back of the net off the centering feed to make it 1-0 with four minutes to play in the quarter. Bridgewater kept pushing and struck again late as a penalty corner after time expired led to Jade Buckles finding Carynn Klingler at the point and she buried her shot from the edge of the scoring zone to make it 2-0 at the half.

  • Each team had chances early in the period, but BC's was better as Amberger, Lexi Francis and Olivia Ohleger each had their shots turned aside. Virginia Wesleyan had an opportunity to strike back late in the frame, but a pair of saves by Madalyn Miller maintained the BC lead after three quarters.

  • The Marlins opened the fourth frame with a pair of penalty corners, but neither resulted in a shot on frame. The teams traded possession through much of the final stanza, but it was BC with the final opportunities as Autumn Just and Ambereger had shots saved during the final seven minutes and change.

Game Notes

  • Klingler and Ambereger had the tallies for the Eagles in the win. Amberger led BC with six shots, while Miller and Nau combined for four stops and a combined shutout.

  • Holsclaw made eight saves for the Marlins in the loss as Meyer had seven of VWU's 11 shots.

  • BC won the shot battle 15-11, including a 10-4 edge in shots on target.
