Women's Volleyball Tops Randolph-Macon in Straight Sets

ASHLAND, Va. - Bridgewater women's volleyball cruised past Randolph-Macon on the road in straight sets Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles have moved to 7-3 in ODAC play.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Randolph-Macon (RMC) 0

Records: BCE (15-6 OVR, 7-3 ODAC), RMC (11-7 OVR, 5-4 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • For much of the match, BCE held firm control. There was very little breathing room for RMC to work with, which quickly became an obstacle, and open chances to pounce on the defense unraveled successfully. In the first set, the Eagles rumbled to a 5-1 start. Reagan Stoop then added a punch soon after, while Agnes Alford added offensive firepower. Faith DePew helped round out the first set with back-to-back strikes for a 25-16 opening score.

  • In the second set, the Yellow Jackets attempted to run a strong attack in the middle of the set and went on a five-point scoring rally. However, the Eagles maintained their strong hitting plans and continued to plunge ahead. DePew and Alford worked together to piece together strong sequencing plays to then give the strong rocket of an arm, Stoop, to take the lead back at 18-17. BCE slipped through and pieced an effective three-point run for a 25-22 second set score.

  • The Eagles got the jump on the Yellow Jackets early in the third set and did not give into any RMC pressure. BCE stayed poised and successfully kept RMC away from any lead threat. Claire Griffith and Gabby Atwell responded well with well-executed sets by Lindsay Kelley to start the set strong and end the set the same way, as Kelley lobbed a pass to Griffith for the thunderous put down. The Eagles nailed the final set, 25-17.

Match Notes

  • Bridgewater cleaned up defensively, amassing 34 digs and eight total blocks. On the offensive end, the Eagles bounced back from some errant attacks the match before with an efficient 35 kills and single digit attack errors (nine).

  • The Eagles whacked 16 kills in the first set alone; nine more kills than the Yellow Jackets, respectively.

  • Reagan Stoop has been back to steadying the offense consistently as she has done a lot throughout the season. Stoop led the match with 13 kills.
