Men's Basketball Drops Game to Battling Bishops

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's basketball team dropped their match against N.C. Wesleyan 85-61 Sunday afternoon.  

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 61, N.C. Wesleyan, 85 

Records: Bridgewater (1-1), N.C. Wesleyan (2-0) 

How It Happened 

  • N.C. Wesleyan opened the game on a 10-0 run in the first 3:44. Bridgewater scored their first basket at the 3:58 mark on a layup from Maleek Richardson. The next possesion, Carter Palmer missed a jumper. Jahmir Brown cleaned the glass and made the putback. After the Battling Bishops drained a pair of free throws, Richardson knocked down a 3-pointer.  

  • While down 20-10 with 11:27 remaining in the half, Bradley Owens drilled a 3-pointer to spark a 10-3 run. Kyren Smith drained a free throw and two triples to cut the N.C. Wesleyan lead to three with 7:17 remaining in the opening half. Wesleyan's Justin Burden and Bridgewater's Mous Diop traded threes in back-to-back possessions. 

  • In the following sequence, Kyren Smith got a steal and was fouled on the fastbreak. Smith knocked down both shots from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to one. 

  • The Battling Bishops responded with a 6-0 run. Diop briefly broke the Bishop's momentum by converting an and-1. Mi'Kis Ingram sunk a layup to cut the NCW lead to four.  

  • Despite the brief swing in momentum, the Battling Bishops ended the first half on a 10-2 run. Burden sunk a shot from deep with two seconds remaining in the half to give N.C. Wesleyan a 44-32 advantage at halftime. 

  • In the first possession of the second half, Owens drained a three from deep to cut the lead back down to single-digits. Scores from Bradley, Diop, and Brown over the next 3:33 would help the Eagles cut the NCW deficit to three.  

  • With 14:13 remaining, Jahmir Brown made a layup to cut the N.C. Wesleyan lead to three. N.C. Wesleyan responded by going on a 8-1 run to increase their lead to double-digits. The Battling Bishops steadily increased their lead over the remainder of the period. 

Match Notes 

  • This is the first loss of the season for Bridgewater. 

  • The Battling Bishops led for the entirety of the contest. 

  • The Battling Bishops were led in scoring by James Jones, who scored 22 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, and 5-7 shooting from behind the arc.  

  • Bridgewater had four scorers with double-digit points (Diop, Smith, Richardson, Owens) 

  • The Eagles shot 21-51 from the field and 8-24 from range this afternoon.

Bridgewater will compete in their home opener against Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on FloCollege.
