HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team fell to St. Vincent. 3-4 on Tuesday in a match that came down to the wire.
BC opened the match by stealing the doubles point. The Bearcats had leads on all three courts including a 1-4 edge to open at the top spot before
Matthew Leonard and
Corey Beshoar got a crucial service break back leading to five-straight games to take a 6-4 victory at the top spot. SVC won at No. 3, but
Eli Morela and
Mark Gordon got a late service break and a clutch hold from Gordon secured the match and the doubles point at 6-4.Â
Bridgewater got on the board first in singles as Leonard won in just three games at No. 1 as his opponent retired due to injury with BC in front 3-0. Gordon put the Eagles in front 2-0 as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.Â
SVC got on the board through a pair of tight matches.
Steven Perry dropped the opening set at the NO. 2 spot 1-6, but regrouped quickly on the way to a 6-2 victory in the second to force a match tiebreak. Perry fell behind early, but fought off a match point before falling 6-10. Morela also went the distance at the No. 4 spot as he jumped ahead 6-3, but fell victim to a pair of tiebreaks to fall 6-7 (1), 5-10.
The Bearcats won at No. 5 singles to put all of the pressure at No. 6.
Cameron Cooley gave it his all, but ultimately fell 0-6, 4-6.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday morning against John Carroll in Hilton Head, weather permitting.
