Men's Lacrosse Battles Hampden-Sydney

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team fell to Hampden-Sydney 11-5 on Saturday.

The Basics
Score:
 Hampden-Sydney 11; Bridgewater 5
Records: Bridgewater 4-9 (2-4 ODAC); Hampden-Sydney 7-4 (2-2 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater jumped on the board first after a Hampden-Sydney turnover. Ryan Linn fired his shot to the back of the net to make it 1-0 for the Eagles just over three minutes in. The Tigers had a fast response after a BC turnover as H-SC evened the score at the 10-minute mark and then took the lead 40 seconds later at a 2-1 edge. The Tigers added two more quick tallies, 10 seconds apart, to take a 4-1 lead with 6:28 to go in the quarter. The teams traded chances down the stretch, including multiple shots by the Eagles in the final minute, but none found the target.
  • Hampden-Sydney had chances early in the second quarter after costly BC turnovers, but a save by Gabe Wallman and a quick clear led to a goal by Jake Wagner to cut the lead down to just a pair. H-SC had a quick response to make it 5-2 and continued to press the issue. Bridgewater ended up getting the stops it needed and flipped the field late as a turnover by the Tigers and a tally from Isaac Beals got BC back on the board. The Eagles added another fast tally right off the faceoff as Beals struck again to cut the Tigers' lead to just one with 43 seconds on the clock. The game went to the half at the same scoreline.
  • Both teams registered a goal early in the third quarter with H-SC striking first and Alex Garbarino registering the response mark for the Eagles with 11:15 to play in the frame. Hampden-Sydney got back in the score column next and did not let the foot off the gas as three unanswered goals made it a 9-5 edge for the visitors. BC had a man-up chance in the final minute of the quarter, but came up empty.
  • H-SC kept on the attack to start the fourth quarter, but did not capitalize until a man-up chance at the seven-minute mark. The Tigers took a 10-5 lead after another costly Eagle turnover and limited the Bridgewater chances down the stretch. The Tigers added a final insurance tally in the final 16 seconds to polish off the victory.
Match Notes
  • Beals led the Eagles offensively with a pair of goals. Addison caused three turnovers to help the defensive effort, while Wallman made 13 saves and scooped up six ground balls.
  • Kavin Wood tallied a hat trick for the Tigers to fuel the offense. Two different Tigers' defenders forced three turnovers, while Conner McMullen made seven stops in the second half in the cage.
  • The Tigers dominated the shot battle 40-28, although the two teams were even in shots in the second half.
