How It Happened
-
In what was at first an unexpected change of pace by the Eagles, BCE was able to kick into a higher gear to push through EMU's attacking sequences. In the first set, the Eagles found themselves in a five-point deficit at 12-7, but quickly shifted momentum back to the Crimson & Gold offense and fired three-straight points led by a monstrous kill by Agnes Alford. Faith DePew added two consecutive service aces on the scoring burst. BCE then charged ahead to lunge into a five-point scoring rally to take the lead at 18-17. From there, the Eagles handled business and finished off the set with a thunderous strike by Gabby Atwell for the 25-22 first set score.
-
Although the Royals kept it close in the second set, the Eagles found their opening to take command of the entire set. Without any huge scoring run, BCE managed to snuff out EMU's attacking plays to precision and countered with solid attacks. Virginia Collins knocked down a kill to help the Eagles take a 15-10 lead. BCE pushed ahead and held onto the firm lead to capture the second set, 25-20.
-
The Eagles did not quiver throughout the match and especially in the third set despite starting off with a two-point deficit. BCE redirected and pieced together a five-point scoring burst and from there held onto the lead the rest of the way. Later in the set, Faith DePew landed back-to-back kills to jump to a steady 19-13 advantage. Maya Veselinovic put the staple in the match with a demanding kill for a 25-18 final set score and a three-set finish.
