Laura Mapp Inducted into Inaugural ODAC Hall of Fame Class

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - In 1998, a much deserved and decorated honoree carved out a spot on the Bridgewater College Hall of Fame wall in a decision that was made unanimously.

Over the span of 37 years, Laura Mapp built a legacy as a successful coach, professor, and mentor. Mapp led the women's basketball program to one of the all-time winningest programs in all of Division III totaling an impressive 484 wins.

Along with the incredible coaching resume, Mapp elevated the meaning of success for the Bridgewater College Eagles. The highly accoladed individual guided the Eagles to ODAC regular season titles in 1983 and 1989 and an ODAC tournament title in 1990. Mapp had an incredible history of pushing her teams to the ultimate limit while participating in ODAC championships seven times and capturing Virginia Intercollegiate Women's Association state championships in '76, '77, and '80; including nationals in '80 and '82.

Mapp also had an instrumental piece in leading the field hockey program at Bridgewater, collecting 224 wins and a Division III state championship to top it off in 1980.

The coaching tenure of this incredible mentor also continued with the tennis program, racking up 161 wins by the end of her 37-year coaching tenure in 1997.

Apart from Mapp's unwavering efforts in coaching, the successful Hall of Fame honoree began her incredible athletic journey as an athlete at the University of Richmond where she did her undergraduate work. Mapp competed in field hockey, basketball, and tennis, while later being inducted into the University of Richmond's Hall of Fame in 1987.

With these amazing accomplishments and achievements, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference has given Bridgewater College the honor of inducting Laura Mapp to the conference's first ever Hall of Fame class in the league's 50-year anniversary of competition.

Laura Mapp along with four other Hall of Fame honorees from Bridgewater Athletics Hall of Fame will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the women's basketball contest against Hollins in Nininger Gym at 4:30 p.m.
