Huge Second Half Pushes Eagles to Victory on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team held Averett without a field goal in the fourth quarter on the way to a 69-42 victory on Senior Day.

How It Happened
  • Jay Garcia knocked down a free throw to get the scoring started, but Averett took the lead with the game's first make from the floor. The two sides traded scores before Garcia nailed a three-pointer to give the Eagles their first multi-point lead at 6-4. Averett tied the game on its next possession, but Jaiden Polston Replied fo the Eagles to take the lead back. A three-pointer by Averett gave the visitors a one-point edge at 9-8, Polston had BC's response and followed with a steal on the other end leading to two makes at the charity stripe by Autumn Gentry. Asia Williams capped off what became a 6-0 BC run as she went coat-to-coast and made it 14-9 for the Eagles with 2:15 to go in the opening period. Averett closed back in with a make at the foul line and a bucket in the closing moments of the frame to make it a 14-12 Bridgewater lead after the first frame.
  • The Cougars got on the board first in the second quarter to tie the contest and RIley Corcoran had the Eagles' reply to take the lead back. The two sides traded scores before buckets from Savannah Wilson and Riley Corcoran swelled the lead to 20-16. Averett replied with five quick points to take the lead back, but a Williams bucket gave BC the lead back on the next trip. Averett tied the game with a make at the charity stripe, but a 6-0 BC run pushed the lead to 28-22 for the Eagles. Averett drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit in half at a 28-25 Eagles' lead at the break.
  • Averett struck first in the third quarter and a Garcia score was BC's response. Averett closed back to within a point with a score, but a Polston bucket sparked a 6-0 BC scoring run to swell the lead to 36-29. Averett stopped the run, but just momentarily as Williams drove and finished at the cup for the Eagles. Averett scored in response, but Garcia drilled a three-pointer and Corcoran followed on BC's next trip to make it a 44-33 lead for BC. Corcoran expanded the lead with a layup to cap off an 8-2 run at a 46-33 score, but AU slowly pieced together a 7-4 scoring run to cut the lead down to 10. Williams made a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to make it 52-40 for the Eagles after three quarters.
  • The fourth quarter as all BC. Corcoran got the scoring started with four makes at the charity stripe for the Eagles. Polston had the period's first make from the field and a steal by Williams on the next AU possession led to a quick fast break score by Polston to make it a 20-point BC lead. Averett continued to struggle as the Bridgewater defense excelled. A pair of free throw makes by Corcoran, a Williams score and three points by Gentry continued to swell the lead before a My'la Green layup capped off what was a 17-0 BC run heading into the games closing seconds. Averett drew a shooting foul with nine seconds on the clock and made both shots at the charity stripe to end what was nearly a scoreless fourth quarter.

  • Corcoran led the way with 21 points for the Eagles led by 10 makes at the charity stripe. Garcia also led the charge with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Polston tossed in 12 points and seven boards. Polston and Garcia combined for 7 blocks for the Eagle, while Williams led BC with four assists and three steals.
  • Diggetts and perkins led AU with 10 points each. Perkins also grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss.
  • Averett opened the game 10-of-30 from the floor in the opening half, but was 18.4% (7/38) in the second half. BC limited Averett to no makes from the floor in the fourth quarter on 17 attempts, while the Eagles were 45.8% from the floor in the second half. The two teams were tied on the galls with 43 rebounds each, but the Eagles held an 18-2 edge in points off turnovers and held AU to 25.0% from the field to secure the win.
