Field Hockey Downs SBC in ODAC Opener

AMHERST, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team picked up a win in its ODAC opener at Sweet Briar on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 3, Sweet Briar 0
Records: Bridgewater 6-4 (1-0 ODAC), Sweet Briar 0-8 (0-1 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater had a scoring chance just 18 seconds in as Lexi Francis rang a shot off the post. Kylie Parker fired a shot a minute later, missing just wide of the cage. The teams traded possession , and BC broke through in the 10th minute as Maylynn Watson rifled a shot to the back of the net to make it 1-0 for the Eagles. Bridgewater continued to push and added to the lead just before the horn as Mollie Best found Natalie Stock off a penalty corner, and Stock fired her shot to the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the Eagles after the opening period.
  • Watson had BC's first scoring chance of the second frame, but her shot missed wide. M. Best ripped a shot on frame a few moments later that was turned aside. Emi Craddock tried to bury the rebound, but missed the target. BC had a pair of penalty corners late in the quarter, but a pair of saves on shots by Stock and Olivia Ohleger kept BC's lead at a pair of goals at the intermission.
  • BC earned a pair of penalty corners in the opening five minutes of the second half, and Sweet Briar fended off the chances. Francis and Carly Lindley each ripped shots on frame during the offensive surge. With under five minutes to go in the frame, M. Best fired a shot on target off a penalty corner, but again the Vixens kept it from extending the Bridgewater lead. SBC had its lone shot in the closing stages of the third quarter, but it missed wide.
  • BC added to the lead in the opening minute of the final period. Parker had her shot brushed aside, but Stock buried the rebound to make it 3-0. BC kept pushing as M. Best had another attempt turned away. The Eagles earned a pair of penalty corners late in the frame, but a save and a block by the Vixens kept it a 3-0 game as the horn sounded.
Game Notes
  • Stock had a pair of goals as she and M. Best tied with a game-high three shots on goal. Reese Davis and M. Best each registered an assist in the contest. Thaleia Khader did not face a shot on target as she went wire-to-wire in the shutout.
  • Littlefield had Sweet Briar's lone shot attempt. Hart made nine saves in the cage for SBC.
  • Bridgewater dominated the stat sheet with a 23-1 edge in shots and a 9-0 edge in penalty corners.
