Men's Soccer Blitz Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - Riley Queen continued to show his dominance on the pitch, scoring twice in the opening 22 minutes as the Bridgewater College men's soccer team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Averett Saturday evening.

The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 6, Averett 1
Records: Bridgewater 7-3-1, (2-0-1); Averett 0-7-0, (0-2-0)

How It Happened
  • Queen wasted little time putting the Eagles ahead, scoring an unassisted goal just 26 seconds into the match. Bridgewater continued searching for a second goal, with Caleb Malekzadeh sending an attempt wide in the 11th minute. Back-to-back corner kicks in the 21st minute kept BC on the attack, and after Trey Widrick fired over the goal, Queen finished off an assist from Noa Denno in the 22nd minute to double the lead.
  • Justin Merino entered in the 24th minute and quickly contributed to the scoring. Following an Averett foul, Merino converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute to make it 3-0. The Eagles' defense kept the Cougars from recording their first shot until the 34th minute, when Edgar Carbajal sent an attempt wide.
  • Braxton Sebastian extended the advantage in the 37th minute, scoring shortly after another Bridgewater corner kick. Sebastian added two more attempts before the break as BC continued pressing forward. Isaac Arenas replaced Zane Kowalski in goal with 1:30 remaining in the half, and the Eagles entered halftime ahead 4-0 with an 8-1 edge in shots and all five corner kicks.
  • Averett generated more chances early in the second half, earning three corner kicks in less than three minutes before Michael Milligan scored in the 52nd minute. Queen sent a shot high and wide in the 55th minute, and Arenas stopped Patrick Leslie in the 58th to keep the Cougars from cutting further into the lead.
  • Widrick restored Bridgewater's four-goal cushion in the 65th minute, scoring from deep just over four minutes after returning to the match. The Eagles continued creating opportunities through Anthony Medrano and Lucio Bianchi, while Arenas denied Leslie again in the 81st minute.
  • Malekzadeh returned in the 84th minute and capped the scoring in the 87th, connecting with Medrano to make it 6-1. Kevin Polanco added one final attempt in the 88th minute as Bridgewater closed out the road victory and remained unbeaten in conference play.

Match Notes
  • Queen led the Eagles with two goals and tied Sebastian for the team lead with three shots. Denno and Medrano each recorded an assist, while Arenas made two saves in 46:30 of action.
  • Milligan scored Averett's lone goal, while Leslie led the Cougars with two shots, both on target.
  • Bridgewater finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 7-5 margin in corner kicks. Five Eagles scored, and all six of BC's shots on target found the net.
