Football Falls to (RV) Hampden-Sydney

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College football team fell to Hampden-Sydney 54-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles' defense came out and forced a quick H-SC punt. Bridgewater moved the chains on its first play from scrimmage as Parker Burke scrambled for a gain of 12 yards. The Eagles were forced to punt after a connection between Burke and Caeden Walters was just short of the line to gain.

Hampden-Sydney took advantage of getting the stop defensively. The Tigers moved 80 yards on nine plays, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Connor Creech to Kam Mahoney with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Tigers with a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles moved the ball on their next possession as Wyatt Jervis moved the chains on an eight-yard rush, but a series of incompletions forced a punt. Hampden-Sydney added to its advantage with a quick scoring drive. Creech connected with Max Nitti for a 43-yard touchdown pass with 4:17 remaining in the opening quarter. Hank Webb added the extra point to make it 13-0.

Bridgewater looked to respond, putting together a drive that moved into Hampden-Sydney territory. However, the Tigers came up with an interception to end the possession and regain the ball.

Hampden-Sydney carried its momentum into the second quarter, putting together a 50-yard drive that ended with another touchdown pass from Creech to Nitti, this time from 3 yards out. Webb's extra point extended the lead to 20-0 with 12:35 remaining in the half.

The Eagles moved into scoring position on their next possession after a 37-yard strike from Burke to Nick Barahona. Bridgewater moved to the Tigers' 15-yard line to overcome a pair of penalties, but a fumble backed BC up and stalled the drive. Ben Bermudez attempted a 42-yard field goal, but the kick was unsuccessful with 7:52 remaining in the half.

Hampden-Sydney capitalized on the ensuing possession, driving 75 yards before Xavier Howard-Morris scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left in the second quarter. Webb added the extra point to make it 27-0.

The Tigers continued to add to their lead late in the half. Creech found Manning Lasso for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:37 remaining, and Webb's extra point pushed the advantage to 34-0. Hampden-Sydney added one more score before halftime, as Webb connected on a 25-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to send the Tigers into the break ahead 37-0.

Bridgewater opened the second half with a drive into Hampden-Sydney territory, but was forced to punt. The BC defense held serve thanks to a pair of stops behind the line by Joey Strong and the tandem of Brayden Billings and Jayden Booth. The Tigers came up with another interception to halt the next Eagles' possession. Hampden-Sydney turned the turnover into points, as Terry Hicks broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter. Webb's extra point made it 44-0.

The Tigers added to their lead early in the fourth quarter. After H-SC missed a 35-yard field goal attempt, Hampden-Sydney's defense forced a turnover on downs and the offense moved into scoring position. Webb connected on a 31-yard field goal with 9:36 remaining to make it 47-0.

Hampden-Sydney added its final touchdown after another interception gave the Tigers possession deep in Bridgewater territory. Wendell Thompson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:24 remaining, and Webb's extra point set the final score at 54-0.

Parker Burke completed 11-of-23 passes for 131 yards. Walters led the Eagles with four receptions for 39 yards, while Barahona added four catches for 67 yards. Horacek rushed for 40 yards to lead the Eagles on the ground.
