BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team took a pair of games from Shenandoah on Tuesday afternoon.
GAME 1
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 8, Mt. Aloysius 0 (5 innings)
Records: Bridgewater 1-0; Mt. Aloysius 0-1
How It Happened
- The leadoff batter for Mt. Aloysius was tagged by a pitch from Mackenzie Cauthorn, but she quickly regrouped with a strikeout during the next at-bat. A single back up the middle with two outs, put a pair of runners on for the Mounties, but another strikeout by Cauthorn shut down the threat. Caroline Malandra opened her season with a bang as she tripled the opposite way to open the home half of the first. Kaelyn Ramsey followed with a single to easily score Malandra and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
- The Mounties put two runners on to open the second frame, but Cauthorn struck out the next three batters to hang up the zero on the scoreboard. BC added to the lead in the home half of the frame as a lead-off walk led to an RBI single by Cauthorn to make it 2-0.
- Both sides went down in order until the Eagles struck in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Wise led off the frame with a walk, and her pinch runner, Molly Ecroyd, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Leiah Branch delivered with a sacrifice fly to allow Ecroyd to score standing up. Lexi Schaaf followed with a base knock, and Cauthorn delivered again with a double to drive in a run and make it 4-0. Mlandra added to the lead as she stepped in next and singled, and Cauthorn just beat the throw to blow the contest open at a 5-0 edge.
- Cauthorn struck out a pair of Mounties in the top of the fifth, and BC pounced as McKenna Mueller singled to the infield and Andrea Savage followed with a double to drive her in. Abby Byrum delivered a few at-bats later with a single in the gap, and the run scored to make it 7-0. Branch put a ball in play next, but an error by Mt. Aloysius allowed Byrum to score and end the game via run-rule.
Match Notes
- Cauthorn (1-0) picked up the win and struck out nine batters in five innings of work. 60% of the outs she recorded were via the punchout. Malandra and Cauthorn each had multiple hits in the win, and the latter led the way with a pair of RBI.
- Wagner (0-1) took the loss for MAC after 2.1 innings of work. Cutri and Smith had the only hits for the Mounties.
GAME 2
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 5, Wilmington 3
Records: Bridgewater 2-0; Wilmington 1-1
How It Happened
- Wilmington hopped on the board first as the Quakers opened the game with a pair of singles. BC regrouped and got a pair of outs, but the third came with controversy. The Quakers hit a ground ball to shortstop, and Mueller gloved it cleanly, but her throw led Lily Moyers into the base path, and the runner and fielder collided as Moyers had the ball ripped away, and WC took a 1-0 lead. Malndra led the BC charge with a leadoff single and swiped second right on cue. Mueller doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out and Andrea Savage did her job with a fly ball to centerfield that allowed Malandra to score and tie the game, 1-1.
- Wilmington put a pair of runners on after both got tagged by a pitch. A double during the next at-bat drove both runners in and gave the Quakers a 3-1 lead with no outs. BC made a change in the circle as Eveylyn Rhoads came on in relief. A nifty defensive play got BC out of the jam, as the Eagles flawlessly spoiled a fake squeeze play by the Quakers, limiting the damage. BC got one of the runs back in short order as Moyers singled, and later in the frame Malandra delivered again, tripled to right field, and made it 3-2.
- Both sides stranded runners in the third frame, and Wilmington did it again in the top of the fourth. Skylar Buzbee drew a walk in the home half of the frame, and BC pounced. Aniella Baldwin laid down a bunt, and the Quakers did not field it cleanly, allowing her to reach and Buzbee's pinch-runner, Ashley Matthews, to get all the way to third base. WC tried to get aggressive and pick off Matthews at third, but the throw was off target, and she trotted home easily to tie the game. Malandra was at the dish again and singled to left field to drive in Baldwin to give the Eagles the lead, 4-3.
- BC added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Savage singled to open the stanza. Sarah Kate Tozier ran for her and moved to second on a groundout. Jordan Wise stepped in and answered the call with a double to allow Tozier to score easily to make it 5-3. An error brought the potential tying run to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth for Wilmington, but a flyout and a punchout by Rhoads silenced the threat. BC stranded a runner in the bottom of the sixth, but secured the win as Wilimngton went down in order in the seventh.
Match Notes
- Rhoads (1-0) picked up the win after 5.2 innings of hitless work in relief. Malandra paced BC offensively in game two with three hits and two RBI.
- Baughmand (0-1) took the loss in the circle for Wilmington. WC had three hits as Franz accounted for two of them and the lone two RBI for the Quakers.
