Second Half Effort Leads Women's Basketball Past Guilford

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Bridgewater College women's basketball team bounced back on Saturday with a 54-48 victory over Guilford led by a strong second half.

The Basics
Score: (RV) Bridgewater 54, Guilford 48
Records: (RV) Bridgewater 17-4 (10-2 ODAC), Guilford 17-4 (8-4 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Riley Corcoran made her second attempt at the charity stripe to give BC a 1-0 lead under 20 seconds in, in her home state. Guilford responded with four-straight points to take its first lead, but another Tar Heel State native, Autumn Gentry, knocked down a jumper for the Eagles in response. Guilford scored on its next trip and went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-3 lead before another Gentry bucket got the Eagles' offense back rolling. The Eagles closed back to within four points a few moments later as an Angelina Yann three-pointer capped off a 7-4 Eagles' run, but Guiford had a long-range jumper of its own in response and stretched the gap once again. The teams traded scores down the stretch with GC taking a 23-15 lead after the opening period.
  • Bridgewater opened up the second quarter with a huge surge of offense. Corcoran was fouled on a put-back attempt and made both shots at the charity stripe to start the frame. She was not done there as she accounted for 10-straight points, including a layup on a dish from Jay Garcia to take a 25-23 lead with 5:24 to play in the half. Guilford missed its first four attempts from the floor and turned the ball over five times during its scoring drought before Dunn finished at the cup to tie the game and get the Quakers on the board for the first time in five minutes. A free throw make gave Guilford the lead back, but a Garcia jumper off a dish from Corcoran put BC back in front at 27-26. The home team replied with a jumper the other way and marched out to a 7-2 scoring run to take a 33-29 lead with under a minute to go in the half. Jaiden Polston connected with Corcoran for the period's final bucket to make it 33-31 in favor of the home side at the break.
  • It was Corcoran again that got the Eagles started in the third period with a make at the charity stripe. Gentry forced a turnover on BC's next possession and Poston finished the job as her second-chance effort found nylon to give BC a 34-33 lead. Guilford got on the board with five consecutive points to take the lead. Gentry came up with a clutch three-pointer a few moments later as the long-range make tied the game midway through the third quarter. GC took the lead back with a make at the charity stripe, but that was short-lived as Gentry found Corcoran, and her layup gave BC the lead back at 39-38. Bridgewater wasn't done there as Garcia drained a jumper and four more points from Gentry swelled the BC advantage. Guilford made a pair of free throws to end the drought, but a kae by Corcoran at the charity stripe in the closing seconds of the quarter capped off a 9-2 Eagles' run to make it 46-40 in favor of the visitors after three quarters of play.
  • The Eagles offense kept rolling as Polston scored on the Eagles' first possession of the fourth quarter, and Corcoran followed to make it a 10-point Bridgewater lead. Guilford ended the drought nearly three minutes into the stanza and put together a small 5-2 run to cut the lead to 52-45 with 6:33 to play. Makes at the charity stripe by  BC extended the lead back to nine points, but neither side scored for nearly two minutes after that. Guilford sank a free throw to cut the lead to 54-46 with 2:14 on the clock and looked to threaten. The Quakers got a few stops, but misses and turnovers plagued the home side. GC scored with 42 seconds to go to slice the lead to six points and got the necessary turnover, but a three-pointer missed the mark, and a Garcia rebound secured the victory for the Eagles.
Match Notes
  • Corcoran was the main catalyst for the Eagles offensively with 22 points. Gentry matched her career-high with 11 points, while Polston and Garcia each tossed in eight points each. Garcia also led BC on the glass with 12 rebounds.
  • Guilford was led by Scott with 12 points. Dunn was the only other Quaker in double figures, as only six GC players scored.
  • GC led 23-15 after the first 10 minutes, but BC outscored the home team 39-25 over the final three periods. Guiflord was held to just four field goals in the entire second half as the Eagles' defense limited them to 11.1% from the floor in the second half.
