Men's Lacrosse Registers Win Over Marietta

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team got back in the win column with an 18-6 victory over the Marietta Pioneers Saturday afternoon.  

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 18, Marietta 6 

Records: Bridgewater (6-1), Marietta (3-4) 

How it Happened 

  • Bridgewater got off to a hot start by going on a 4-0 run in the first five minutes of action. Luke Wendler got the Eagles on the board in the first minute on an assist from Riley Stewart. With 3:41 elapsed in the contest, Stewart found the back of the net unassisted. Jack Nugent scored on a Cooper Hann assist to put the Eagles up 3-0 and force Marietta to take the first timeout of the contest. Coming out of the timeout, Nugent scored again on an assist from Wendler, who picked up the 100th point of his collegiate career with the assist. Marietta finally got on the board after being scoreless for the first seven minutes of the contest. BC scored three goals over the remainder of the quarter to enter the first break with a 7-1 advantage. Issac Beals scored the first two unassisted, and Stewart scored his second goal of the contest in the waning seconds of the quarter. 

  • Bridgewater picked up where they left off in the second quarter, finding the back of the net 13 seconds into the period. Jake Wagner notched his first goal of the contest with 11:43 on the clock on an assist from Ryan Linn. Beals secured a hat trick with 9:20 remaining in the half. Hann connected with Wendler a couple minutes later to put the Eagles up by double-digits. After a five minute scoring drought from both sides, Marietta scored their second goal of the contest to make it a 11-2 ball game. Blake Sherin scored the final goal of the half with 1:50 remaining on the clock to send the Eagles into the halftime break with a 12-2 advantage. 

  • Both teams struggled to score in the first 5:30 of second half play. Marietta broke the drought by scoring two goals in the following two minutes. Hann found the back of the net with 6:50 left in the third quarter to give the Eagles their first score of the second half. Wendler and Sherin both scored a goal apiece in the final three minutes of the quarter. 

  • Chris McBroom found the back of the net in the first minute of the final stanza to give the Eagles a 16-4 advantage. Marietta scored twice to cut the BC lead to 10. Sherin scored with 3:42 remaining in the contest, and Gavin Brown scored in the final minute to put the Eagles back in the win column. 

Game Notes 

  • Bridgewater takes the first matchup between the two squads in program history. 

  • With his first assist of the game, Luke Wendler picked up the 100th point of his collegiate career. Wendler ended the game with a team-leading six points, coming from four goals and two assists. 

  • With Killian Krapfl being inactive, Colt Short took the bulk of the reps in the faceoff circle for the Eagles. The sophomore went 12-27 in the circle and scooped eight ground balls. Andrew Orsi won his only rep of the afternoon. 

  • Ian Cook logged 48 minutes in between the pipes and recorded nine saves. In the early minutes of the fourth quarter, Zach Guthrie-Pimpinella was subbed in. Guthrie-Pimpinella recorded four saves in nearly 12 minutes of action. 

  • BC outshot MC 44-32. The Eagles put 25 on target compared to the Pioneers' 19. 

  • Neither team was able to convert on an extra man opportunity. 

  • This was the last of a four-game home series and the last non-conference game of the season for Bridgewater. 

What's Next? 

Bridgewater faces Hampden-Sydney on the road on Wednesday, Mar. 18 at 7 p.m. This will be the first ODAC game of the season for the Eagles.
