Eagles Dominate Mary Baldwin

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team did not allow a run in  a sweep of Mary Baldwin on Sunday.

Game 1
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 13, Mary Baldwin 0 (Five Innings)
Records: Bridgewater 11-4, Mardy Baldwin 4-9

How It Happened
  • Mackenzie Cauthorn came out dealing to open the doubleheader with a pair of strikeouts against the first two batters. Caroline Malandra made a diving grab to end the frame and led off the home half with a double. Aniella Baldwin followed with a perfectly placed bunt to allow her to reach safely and advance the leadoff batter. The Fighting Squirrels hung up Malandra at third to get the opening out of the inning, but McKenna Mueller reached on the play. Lily Moyers dug in next and singled to left field to drive in Baldwin and start the scoring. Leiah Branch walked to load the bases again, and Abby Byrum delivered next as a sacrifice fly drove in Mueller to make it 2-0. Kaelyn Ramsey drew another walk to load the bases again, while Andrea Savage added to the lead with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Cauthorn added to her run support to drive in Ramsey to cap off a five-run opening inning.
  • Cauthorn struck out the side in the second and backed it up with two more punchouts in the third frame. MBU earned their only base hit of the contest during the third inning, but the runner did not make it past first.
  • Savage drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the third. Ashley Matthews came on to run for her and scored three pitches later as Cauthorn tripled to right field to make it 6-0. Baldwin drove Cauthorn in one out later with a single the opposite way, and Mueller drove her in on the next at bat with a double to right center. Moyers reached on a single to put two runners on for Branch and she delivered with a double to finish off another five-run frame. BC led 10-0 after three innings.
  • MBU went down in order once more in the top of the fourth, and BC added to the lead again. Singles by Grace Anderson and Cauthorn put runners on for Malndra. The BC second baseman singled to drive in Anderson, while a Jordan Wise base knock allowed Cauthorn to score. Mueller followed with a single to drive in Malandra and stretch the lead to its largest at 13-0.
  • Cauthorn worked quickly to get the first two outs of the frame, but MBU earned just its second runner of the frame with a full-count walk. In true Cauthorn fashion, she closed out the contest with a strikeout to secure the run-rule victory.
Match Notes,
  • Cauthorn (6-2) nearly matched her career-best with nine strikeouts in her one-hit performance. Mueller, Branch, Cauthorn and Savage paced the BC offensive attack with a pair of runs driven in each.
  •  Schreck (1-4) took the loss for MBU after giving up five runs without getting out of the first inning. Rush had the visitors' lone hit.
Game 2
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 6, Mary Baldwin 0
Records: Bridgewater 12-4, Mary Baldwin 4-10

How It Happened
  • Evelyn Rhoads opened game two, dealing as three strikeouts accounted for the contest's first three outs, with a walk sandwiched in. Malandra opened the contest with a four-pitch walk for BC and stole second immediately. After a failed bunt attempt, a groundout by Mueller moved Malandra to third, but she was left stranded.
  • Rhoads accounted for the next three outs again as another pair of punchouts sandwiched a lineout back up the middle. Branch opened the second with a walk for BC. Matthews subbed in and swiped second base, before a KLexi Schaaf base hit drove her in to make it 1-0. Byrum drew a walk to put two runners on, but a failed double steal and a pair of pop-ups to the infield stranded Byrum.
  • The no-hit bid was alive until a two-out single in the top of the fourth for the Fighting Squirrels. A flyout to left field stranded the runner, and BC clapped back. Schaaf opened the home half of the frame with a double, and Byrum walked to put a pair of runners on. Ramsey stepped in an out later and singled to drive in Schaaf and push Byrum 60 feet closer. Malandra delivered once again as she followed with a single up the middle to drive in both runners and make it 4-0.
  • MBU stranded a runner in the top of the fifth after a two-out walk. BC put a pair of runners on in response, thanks to a Moyers base rip and a Branch walk. Byrum put a ball in play later in the frame with two outs, and BUdid not field it cleanly. She reached safely and pinch runner Molly Ecroyd scored easily to stretch it to a 5-0 lead.
  • The visitors stranded a runner in the sixth, while BC added to the lead again. With one out in the frame, Malndra drilled a ball to right field. Two MBU fielders tried to make the play on the same real estate and collided. Malndra came all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run to make it 6-0. Baldwin followed with a walk, but was left stranded. The Fighting Squirrels were down to their last try and put a runner on with a two-out knock. The next pitch, Rhoads induced a lazy flyball to Ramsey in left field to secure the sweep.
Match Notes,
  • Rhoads (5-1) picked up the win as she continued the Eagles' dominance in the circle. She recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits. Malandra and Schaaf tallied multiple hits for BC in the win, while the Eagles tallied eight stolen bases in game two. BC had 13 in total on the day.
  • Smiley (1-4) took the loss for MBU in the circle. Three different Fighting Squirrels accounted for the squad's three hits.
