Men's Volleyball Stumbles Against Va. Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's volleyball team fell to Va. Wesleyan in three sets on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Va. Wesleyan (VWU) 3, Bridgewater (BC) 0

Records: BC (5-24, 2-12), VWU (19-8, 8-6)

How It Happened

  • The Va. Wesleyan Marlins stifled the Bridgewater Eagles offense in each set and countered each attack with strong impact. The Eagles found themselves climbing back from deficits throughout the match and struggled to gain traction. The Marlins immediately charged ahead in the opening set using a five-point scoring run to their advantage. Another six-point run shaped the rest of the set as the attacking sequences were successfully executed. VWU took the first set, 25-11.

  • The Eagles continued to find themselves climbing back from opening deficits and large scoring runs. The Marlins extended their scoring surge to 15-4 after an aggressive eight-point scoring burst. BC managed to respond later in the set as the offense began to connect effectively as Isaiah WhiteTomi Visgaitis, and Seth Williams all contributed kills in an eight-point rally. However, the late run came up just short as VWU held on for the 25-19 second set score.

  • In the third set, BC opened with its first lead of the match, but the lead was quickly snuffed out and answered with an explosive nine-point scoring run. VWU commanded the rest of the way as another six-point run took hold later in the set. The Marlins closed out successfully with a 25-14 final set to win in three sets.

Match Notes

  • Bridgewater struggled to maintain an efficient hitting percentage and faced 17 attack errors of 19 kills.

  • The Marlins had the edge in total points with 58 points to 23 for the Eagles, respectively.

  • With 11 assists, Tomi Visgaitis now holds 420 assists. In total, that ranks eighth-most in the conference.
