SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College baseball snapped its record-breaking start to the season of 12 straight wins with a pair of setbacks against Roanoke on the road falling 6-5 in the first game and 11-5 in the second game Saturday.
The Bridgewater College Eagles (BC) now stand at 12-2 overall and 0-2 to start ODAC action, and the Roanoke Maroons (ROA) have moved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
How It Happened
Game 1
-
The Eagles went head-to-head with Roanoke until the final inning in the first game of the doubleheader. Each team recovered offensive punches, but the home squad in Roanoke had the last look in the ninth to strike the final move. The Maroons struck first in the second inning with a scored run on an infield error. ROA continued to build the lead the next inning, piecing together an RBI single to take a 2-0 edge.
-
In the ninth inning, both teams looked to secure the first win in conference play, and aggressive offense soon followed. BC attempted to add cushion to the lead as Smith hit a two-run dinger, but ROA initiated a late-game surge in a walk-off opportunity. The Maroons knotted up the score at five apiece with a bases-clearing double. The opposing offense soon followed with the game-winning run earned from a walk-off double. The Maroons secured the win in the walk-off to take the first of two at 6-5.
Game 2
-
BC was never able to recover after facing a six-run deficit after the opening inning, and the Maroons confidently settled in. ROA flowed comfortably early and often taking advantage of three errors defensively in the contest. ROA's offense began with back-to-back RBI singles to bring in a total of four runs, which led to an unearned run from a passed ball and the sixth RBI off the third single in the first inning.
-
The Eagles had a big hole to fill and could never gain an offensive flow to rally back despite hard efforts to. In the second inning, the Eagles mustered a run from a single by Bryce Suters. BC had bases loaded, and Nick Stavros earned his base to knock in another run. Bransen Hensley tacked on a third run with an infield single to score Christian Harris. BC was stopped there for the next six straight innings.
-
BC faced fielding miscues in the fifth inning, sparking an even larger lead for the Maroons as two runs came around to score off the fielding error. Then, through the next two innings, ROA pushed the comfortable lead even further for an 11-3 edge with a pair of RBI doubles.
