Men's Lacrosse Downs Berry, Ties Best Start in Program History

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team won 11-8 against Berry Saturday afternoon. With this win, the Eagles improved to 5-0 on the season, tying the 2018 season for the best start in program history.

How it Happened 
  • Berry opened with two unassisted goals in the first three minutes of action. With 9:37 remaining in the opening period, Riley Stewart found Jake Wagner to get the Eagles on the board. Berry bumped their lead back up to two with a goal four minutes later. Wagner quickly responded with a goal of their own to close the gap. Both goalies faced pressure in the final four minutes of the quarter, but neither conceded a goal. 
  • Berry scored quickly at the beginning of the second quarter when their faceoff, Caleb Johnson, won the faceoff, scooped up the ground ball, and found the back of the net in a span of ten seconds. Cooper Hann scored with an assist from Tristan Lee a couple of minutes later to make it a 4-3 game. Berry scored once more before Bridgewater went on a 4-0 scoring run over the final nine minutes of the half. Riley Stewart sparked the run with an unassisted goal. Issac Beals scored unassisted with 4:54 remaining in the half. Beals found the back of the net again with a minute remaining in the half. In the final seconds of the half, TJ Jankiewicz scooped up a ground ball and found CJ McKnight for the clear. McKnight dished a pass to Wendler, who scored as time expired to give the Eagles a 7-5 advantage heading into the halftime break. 
  • Bridgewater continued their hot streak, notching two goals to begin the third quarter. Captains Stewart and Ryan Linn connected two minutes into the second half for a goal. Wagner secured a hat trick with 10:06 remaining in the period, making the score 9-5 favoring Bridgewater. Berry scored two more, but Wagner scored his fourth goal of the afternoon on an assist from Beals to make it a 10-7 ball game entering the final period. 
  • In the final quarter, both teams only scored a goal apiece. Beals, assisted by Lee, gave the Eagles an 11-7 advantage, their biggest of the contest. The Vikings scored the final goal of the contest with 5:58 left on the clock. 
Game Notes 
  • Both teams were nearly even in the shots column, with Bridgewater narrowly winning that battle 36-34. Berry put more shots on target with a 21-18 advantage. 
  • Both teams were also even in the turnovers category. Bridgewater had 20, while Berry had 21. 
  • Bridgewater won 15 faceoff opportunities. Killian Krapfl took the most reps, going 8-16 in the circle. Andrew Orsi also stepped up, winning two faceoffs. 
  • With the win, the Eagles improved to 5-0 this season. This ties the 2018 season for the best start in program history. 
  • Jake Wagner and Issac Beals each recorded four points. Wagner scored four goals, while Beals scored three goals and one assist.  
  • Bridgewater took the win in the first meeting between these two teams. 
  • Ian Cook recorded 13 saves this afternoon.
