Softball Drops Two Close Games to Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Softball dropped a pair of tight games to Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1
The Basics
Score: Shenandoah 2, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 23-10 (10-5 ODAC), Shenandoah 26-6 (10-3 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Caroline Malandra and Aniella Baldwin opened the contest with a pair of base knocks and each moved into scoring position with no outs. Shenandoah regrouped with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout followed, leaving a pair of runners stranded. Mackenzie Cauthorn got the nod in game one for BC and worked through the first with just surrendering a walk.
  • Both teams went down in order until Olivia Eastlake was tagged by a pitch with two gone in the fourth frame. Andrea Savage followed with a double to move both her and Eastlake into scoring position, but a pop up in foul ground ended the frame.
  • Shenandoah opened the bottom of the fourth with a walk, but Cauthorn responded well with a pair of two quick outs. Eagleton stepped in next and hit a rocket over the wall in right center for a homerun, giving SU a 2-0 lead.
  • Cauthorn opened the top of the fifth with a single in response for BC. Baldwin followed with an infield hit an out later to put two runners on with one out. McKenna Mueller dug in next, but a heads up play on a ground ball to shortstop got the lead runner and kept Baldwin at second and now Mueller at first. The two runners advanced on a wild pitch during the next at bat, but a flashy play by the Hornets' pitcher ended the frame.
  • Both pitchers locked in from there as Cauthorn did not allow a runner in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth, giving BC a chance in the seventh. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh after a pair of good defensive plays by the Hornets gave the home side the win.
Match Notes,
  • Cauthorn (12-5) took the loss despite allowing just a single hit, the two-run shot. Baldwin led the offensive charge for BC with a pair of hits as the Eagles outhit the Hornets 6-1.
  • Ravenkamp (11-2) picked up the win for the Hornets in the shutout. Eagleton had the loan hit for SU as the home team was limited to just three baserunners in the contest.

Game 2
The Basics
Score: Shenandoah 4, Bridgewater 2
Records: Bridgewater 23-11 (10-6 ODAC), Shenandoah 27-6 (11-3 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater went down in order to start game two, and Shenandoah looked to pounce. The Hornets tallied an infield hit, but a double play by Malandra and Leiah Branch ended the frame.
  • Bridgewater got on the board with two down in the top of the second. McKenna Dayton worked a full count and turned on a pitch and went yard. Her solo shot gave BC a 1-0 lead. Andrea Savage followed with a single and Branch drew a walk to put two runners on, but a groundout ended the frame.
  • Evelyn Rhoads put SU down in order in the bottom of the second and BC added to the lead right away. Malandra took the third puitch she saw of the frame and belted it over the wall in left center field to make it a 2-0 lead. SU broke up their runner-drought with a base hit and the runner moved her way to third but a strikeout by Rhoads kept the lead at a pair of runs.
  • BC went down in order in the fourth and SU stranded a runner in the frame. BC used singles by Byrum and Baldwin, along with a walk by Malandra to jam the bases with one out. A foul out and a pop up stranded the three runners Shenandoah rallied as BC made a change in the circle. A one-out double followed by a single back up the middle drove in SU's first run of the afternoon. BC caught the runner stealing, but an error extended the inning. A great hustle play by Mueller in foul ground ended the frame.
  • The Eagles went down in order in the sixth, and Eagleton struck again in the bottom half with a solo shot to left field to even the score. Bridgewater looked to bounce back as Malandra doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh. Baldwin drew a walk to put a pair of runners on, but an infield pop up ended the Eagles' threat. A groundout to Cauthorn got the first out, but a single through the left side put the go-ahead run on. The next Hornet hitter stepped in and crushed a ball to left field and out of the confines of the park for a walkoff two-run home run.
Match Notes,
  • Cauthorn (12-6) took the loss for the Eagles in game two after giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief work. Malandra led the charge on offense for BC with a pair of hits. She and Dayton left the yard with solo homeruns for Bridgewater.
  • Matthews (3-0) picked up the win for SU after going the advertised distance. Medellin and Jensen led the offense for SU including three runs driven in for Jensen, including the walk off.
