No. 10 Baseball Explodes Past Washington and Lee at Home

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 10 nationally ranked Bridgewater College baseball team bested Washington and Lee by a final score of 13-3 at home Tuesday. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater (BC) 13, Washington and Lee (WLU) 3 

Records: BC (29-8, 11-7), WLU (17-12-1, 10-9-1) 

How It Happened 

  • Although the action began at a standstill for two full innings, the Eagles found their opening in the third and immediately broke away from the Generals in commanding fashion. The first punch was enough to keep the momentum for the rest of the game following an eight-run inning in the third. 

  • Trent Holland sized up a shot through the infield scoring in Zack Chadwell to start the bottom half inning in the third. TJ Johnson followed suit with a single, bringing home Bransen Hensley. Shortly after with bases loaded and the offense continuing to threaten, Bryce Suters added a third run, scored on a passed ball. Ashton Smith then lined a single in the open gap of center field to knock in Holland.  

  • The Generals faced continuous pressure by the Eagles with aggressive base running and effective plate discipline. Jakson Walter and Chadwell helped knock in Johnson and Smith with a hit-by-pitch and a walk; while Bransen Hensley helped extend the inning by beating out a throw at first to score Nick Stavros.  Walter closed out the dominant offensive pressure with a run scored on a passed ball to claim an 8-0 surge.

  • The Generals mustered a run in the fourth and fifth, scoring on a fielder's choice and an RBI single; but that quick burst was snuffed by the commanding offensive pace by the Eagles. Following the two added runs by the Generals, Walter got Stavros around to score off an error in the infield to jump to a 9-2 lead. Chandler Valbak then shut the door on WLU with more certainty with a two-run home run over the left field wall. Walter came back up in the sixth and drilled a single to left center to bring home Johnson to pile on an 11-run lead.

  • With a dominant 13-2 advantage, the Generals were in danger of the run rule. The Eagles gave up a run in the seventh to drop the lead to exactly 10 runs while remaining in position to earn the run rule. BC sealed the job as Hunter Covill held down the lead and came away with a 13-3 victory.  

Game Notes 

  • Jakson Walter led the game with four RBIs along with a run and a hit. 

  • Zack Chadwell went 3-for-4 on the day along with two runs and one RBI. 

  • The Eagles doubled the Generals with eight walks. 

  • Lucas Cash earned his fifth win after logging five innings pitched with two earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 22 to face Mary Washington at home beginning at 3 p.m.
