No. 9 Baseball Falls to No. 5 Shenandoah at Home

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 6/9 Bridgewater College baseball team fell to No. 6/5 ranked Shenandoah by a final score of 13-4 Tuesday at home.

The Basics

Score: Shenandoah (SU) 13, Bridgewater (BC) 4

Records: BC (23-6, 7-5), SU (27-4, 11-4)

How It Happened

  • The Shenandoah Hornets attacked early and set the pace of play for the entire game, while the Eagles struggled to maintain scoring momentum. In the second inning, the Hornets brought in four runs with a two-run double and a pair of RBI singles. BC cashed in a run to answer back in the bottom of the inning as Jake Harris laced a single to center field to score Chandler Valbak, but SU stopped the offensive activity in the frame.

  • In the third inning, Valbak helped the Eagles grab more momentum with a dart through the left side infield to knock in Trent Holland. However, the rally to climb back was stunted as SU tacked another run on in the fourth inning to lead 5-2.

  • The Eagles hung close and battled at the plate, mustering another run to close the deficit to two runs with an RBI double by Zack Chadwell.  From there, the Hornets rode four straight innings on a scoring streak, positioning them with complete control.

  • In the fifth inning, SU took a five-run lead with a three-run homer. BC could not answer back. The Hornets pushed ahead in the next three innings to a total of five runs. The offense was ignited with two RBI singles, a solo home run, and an RBI sacrifice fly for the potential run rule decision at play with a 13-3 advantage.

  • BC avoided the run rule in the bottom of the eighth inning with a short burst of offense. The Eagles created bases loaded. Bryce Suters pieced together a scored run with a single to right field, knocking in Chadwell.

  • The Hornets closed out the offense and retired four straight batters to claim the win.

Game Notes

  • Bridgewater struggled to get runners home, stranding 15 on base.

  • Both teams each recorded 14 hits.
