Medrano Tallies Two; Eagles Fly Past Maroons In ODAC Opener

SALEM, Va. - Anthony Medrano tallies two of his own as Eagles fly higher than the Maroons Saturday night.

How It Happened
 
  • Both teams searched for an early breakthrough, with Kowalski denying Pacific Kabungulu in the 18th minute before Roanoke's defense kept out a Braxton Sebastian attempt in the 21st. The Eagles broke through in the 37th minute when Medrano scored an unassisted goal, just 28 seconds after Joshua Parker forced a save from Denzel Marufu. BC carried the 1-0 lead into halftime with shots even at five apiece.
  • Roanoke increased its pressure after the break, but Kowalski protected the advantage with saves against Grey Morris in the 52nd minute and Craig Huxtable in the 59th. Bridgewater created chances of its own, with Leyden Mongold testing Marufu in the 53rd minute and Kevin Polanco's attempt turned away by the Roanoke defense in the 64th.
  • The match remained within reach for the Maroons until the closing minutes. Kowalski stopped Dagur Vilhjalmsson in the 79th minute to preserve the shutout before Medrano delivered his second goal in the 84th, finishing off an assist from Riley Queen to give the Eagles breathing room.
  • Bridgewater added another goal just 96 seconds later when Derek Londeree converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute. The two late goals capped the scoring as BC closed out the conference road victory, and the Eagles return home on a victorious day.
 
Match Notes
 
  • Medrano scored on both of his shots, while Kowalski finished with four saves, including three in the second half. Queen contributed an assist, and Londeree converted the match's lone penalty kick.
  • Marufu recorded two saves for Roanoke, with the Maroons adding two team saves.
  • Bridgewater put seven of its nine shots on goal and scored three times. Roanoke held a 14-9 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but BC led 7-4 in shots on goal.

The Eagles are back on their home turf Wednesday Sept. 30 to take on the Quakers of Guilford College in their Bleed Crimson game.
