Field Hockey Takes Down St. Mary's

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team took down St. Mary's 1-0 on Saturday.

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 1, St. Mary's (Md.) 0

How It Happened 

  • Bridgewater opened the game with a penalty corner within the opening minute. BC did not get a shot on the opportunity, but earned another in the fourth minute. Casey Grell had her shot blocked on the chance, but Maylynn Watson scooped up the loose change and fired it home to make it 1-0 for the Eagles. Bridgewater continued to hold the edge in the pace of the opening frame as it earned two more penalty corners in the frame. Mollie Best had a look at the crease late in the frame, but her shot was blocked on its way to the cage. 

  • SMC opened the second quarter with a chance early in the frame. The Seahawks earned a penalty corner within the opening minutes of the frame and rifled a shot that went wide. BC flipped the field and earned a penalty corner of its own. Watson looked to add to her tally as her first attempt was turned aside by Kent and her second was denied on the goal line by an SMC defender. The Seahawks earned a pair of corners of their own and, fired a shot that was turned away by Rachel Adel. SMC earned two more in the final stages of the half, and again Adel stood tall with a save to maintain the lead. BC earned a pair of penalty corners in response in the final minute of the stanza, but it remained a 1-0 BC lead at the break. 

  • The Eagles had the first chance of the third quarter as it fired a pair of shots on a penalty corner, but Kent turned away the attempt that was on target. Kiley Parker rifled a shot on target late in the frame, but another Seahawks save kept the game within reach. Bridgewater kept pushing as Fallon Dsimukes had her shot blocked in the final two minutes of the quarter, leaving it 1-0 heading to the fourth.

  • St. Mary's was not going to go away lightly in the fourth. The Seahawks fired a shot that was blocked in the opening minutes of the quarter, and BC replied. Best had her shot a few moments later blocked, and the teams traded possessions. SMC had sustained possession in the final minute deep in the attacking end. The visiting team amassed just one shot from the exchange, and it caught Grell up high to secure the victory. 

Game Notes 

  • Watson tallied the contest's only goal with her game-high four shots. Adel saved both of SMC's shots on target as she and Thaleia Khader combined for the shutout.

  • Knott led a balanced St. Mary's attack with two shots. Kent made four saves in the cage on the five shots she faced. 

  • BC held a 13-5 edge in shots and an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners in the victory.
