Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of Bridgewater's poor play in
the first half to take a 37-28 halftime lead and then held on in
the second half to defeat the Eagles, 70-65, in ODAC action
Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles shot just 33 percent (10-of-30) in the first half and
turned the ball over 16 times. The Eagles stayed within striking
distance with some solid work on the glass as they outrebounded the
Marlins 22-13 in the first half.
The Eagles never led in the second half, but twice pulled to within
a bucket.
Virginia Wesleyan pushed the lead to 12 early in the second half,
but Bridgewater fought back and trailed by just two, 50-48, with
9:54 left when Kyle Hammond converted a 3-point play.
The Marlins responded and pushed the lead back to nine, but the
Eagles had one more run left. Bridgewater pulled to within two
points,67-65, on a layup by Michael Oblitey with 16 seconds left,
but Stephen Fields answered with two foul shots with 12 seconds
remaining to help preserve the win for the visitors.
Dominic Trawick scored 19 points and Oblitey added 15 for the
Eagles. Justin Reavis finished with 12 points and a team-high nine
rebounds.
Field scored 25 points for the Marlins and Norman Hassell added
14.
Bridgewater is now 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC. Virginia
Wesleyan is 7-5, 1-2 in the ODAC.
