BRIDGEWATER, Va. - On the heels of head coach
Michael Clark's 100th victory and the team's second
straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory, the
Bridgewater Eagles (5-2, 2-1 ODAC) football team will travel just
down I-81 for their road finale against Washington and Lee (3-5,
2-2 ODAC).
This week's game will be a battle of two teams looking to do
completely opposite things as the Thomas Tate powered Bridgewater
running attack will look to go against the top run defense in the
ODAC.
Bridgewater's offense has turned to Tate to carry the load in
recent weeks, with the Staunton, Va. native barreling over Guilford
and Emory & Henry for 300-plus yards in the two games combined.
Tate has rolled to four straight 100-yard games and a pair of ODAC
Offensive Player of the Week honors. The junior needs a mere 145
yards over the next three games to become only the eighth running
back in Bridgewater history to run for 1,000 yards in a season and
the first to hit 1,000 yards since Phillip Carter in 2007.
While Tate has run wild, quarterback Hagan Driskell has
commandeered the offense well, throwing for 369 yards and three
touchdowns while not throwing an interception. Driskell's main
target, junior Tyler Beiler comes into the game in ninth place
all-time with 1,400 career receiving yards and needing just one
reception to move into ninth place on the all-time BC receptions
list and 15 yards to move into seventh place all-time.
Driskell is also climbing up the record books in both the season
and career lists. The Caroline, Va. native is currently one
touchdown away from ninth place on the season TD list and 51 yards
from 11th place on the season yardage list. With 18 more
completions, Driskell will move into fifth place on the career
completions list with 221.
For the Generals, the run defense has been superb all season.
Washington and Lee has yet to allow an opposing running back to
cross the 100-yard barrier, while teams as a whole are averaging a
meager 85 yards against a stingy W&L front.
Although the run defense has shined, big plays have harmed the
passing defense for the Generals. Washington and Lee is allowing
opponents to throw for an average of 233 yards per game.
Offensively, W&L's split veer/pistol offense has carved
opponents up for 203 yards on the ground per game with the
conference's top rushing offense.
BC's defense, much maligned earlier in the season, has shown
drastic improvement in recent weeks, especially in terms of run
defense. Through three games, the Eagles were allowing opponents an
average of 236 yards on the ground, but in the past four games,
teams have run for 100 yards less at 135 yards per game.
Look for Bridgewater to get on top of W&L early and force
the Generals out of their comfort zone as the Eagles currently own
a perfect 4-0 mark when scoring first and leading at the halftime
intermission.
Kickoff from Wilson Field in Lexington, Va. is slated for 1:00
p.m. on Saturday. For fans who are unable to make it to Lexington,
Bill Phipps and Brian Shifflett will call the action live from
Wilson Field on ESPN 1360 WHBG in The Valley. The game will also be
aired live on the internet at FutureMediaWorld.com and through
