Bridgewater College rode a pair of strong pitching performances
and the hot bat of Lauren Childress to sweep an ODAC doubleheader
Wednesday from Eastern Mennonite. The Eagles won the opener 5-1 and
the second game 7-1.
EMU took a quick lead in the opener when leadoff batter Lisa Lee
belted a homer off of BC starter Ashley Gills.
The Eagles took the lead for good against Lee with three runs in
the second. Mallory Sandridge drove home two runs with a single and
Emily Morris chased home another run with a groundout, giving BC a
3-1 lead.
In the third Childress tripled and scored on a single by Elizabeth
Smith for a 4-1 lead. The Eagles scored their final run on a
groundout by Caity Butler in the fourth.
After allowing the first inning homer, Gills blanked the Royals the
rest of the way, allowing just four more hits. She struck out five
and walked one to improve to 4-0 on the season.
In the second game, the Eagles had six straight hits in the bottom
of the first to open a 5-0 lead.
Hillary Rees led off the inning with a double and moved to third on
a single by Sandridge. With runners at second and third, Morris
singled to give BC a 2-0 lead. Kaitlyn Bowman doubled to move
Morris to third and both scored on a single by Caity Butler, making
the score 4-0. Morris scored when Childress tripled to make the
score 5-0.
That was plenty of support for BC pitcher Becky Schmidt who pitched
a complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits. Schmidt
struck out nine and did not walk a batter to improve to 4-0 on the
season.
The Eagles are now 12-0 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC. EMU
drops to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the ODAC.
