The cold, snowy weather kept the Bridgewater softball team off the
field for a week, but it didn't take long for the Eagles to
warm up on a beautiful spring afternoon Saturday.
The Eagles play all facets of the game to near-perfection and swept
McDaniel College in a doubleheader, 7-0 and 17-0. The pitching
hurled consecutive shutouts, highlighted by Ashley Gills'
no-hitter in the opener.
The defense played errorless ball in both games.
And the hitters pounded out 25 hits to score 20 runs. Emily Morris
led the offense with four RBIs in the opener with a single and a
homer. In the second game she added two doubles, a triple, a homer
and more RBIs to finish the day with 12 runs batted in.
In the opener, Gills dominated the McDaniel hitters. She struck out
10, walked one and hit one batter in pitching the no-hitter.
The Green Terror only came close to getting a hit one time and that
came in the first inning. After Beth Ann Fusco walked with two
outs, Erinne Warrenfeltz hit a grounder down the third baseline.
Lauren Childress made a dive grab and threw Warrenfeltz out by a
step to end the top of the first.
The Eagles scored in the bottom of the inning when Hillary Rees led
off with a double, stole third and scored on a single by
Morris.
Warrenfeltz held the Eagles at bay until the fifth when the BC bats
came alive with six runs on six hits. With one out, Rees walked and
Mallory Sandridge followed with a single. Morris then belted a
3-run homer to put the Eagles on top 4-0. With two outs Caity
Butler doubled and scored on a double by Childress, making the
score 5-0. Childress scored on a single by Elizabeth Smith and
Smith came around to score on a Drew Rutledge single, making the
score 7-0.
The Eagles wasted little time in the second game as they scored 11
times in the bottom of the first. Morris drove home the first two
runs with a double and Caity Butler added a two-run homer, making
the score 4-0. Kristen Combs cleared the bases with a double to
make it 7-0 and Morris added another two-run double for a 9-0 lead.
Kaitlyn Bowman capped off the inning with a two-run homer for an
11-0 lead.
Morris finished off her day with a two-run homer in the third and a
two-run triple in the fourth.
Lindsay Lam, Becky Schmidt and Summer Ramsey combined on the
three-hit shutout with each pitcher allowing one single.
