Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - For the Bridgewater Eagles
(5-3) field hockey team, easy doesn't make its way into the
dictionary. Despite outshooting Wilson College (1-7) by a 27-7
margin the Eagles had to play nearly two extra sessions before
finally defeating the Phoenix by a 2-1 score at Mapp Field.
BC jumped out to an early lead at the 5:31 mark when a Sarah
McKee shot found the back of the net off a rebound to give the
Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Bridgewater would control the remainder of the first half,
holding Wilson to one shot and keeping the throttle on the offense
to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Following the halftime break, both teams did a role reversal,
with Wilson applying the pressure en route to netting the equalizer
at the 59:25 mark off a Leigh Roche shot to knot things at one.
Both teams had ample opportunities to end the game in
regulation, but the horn sounded with the game knotted at one
apiece, sending things to overtime.
Wilson would apply the majority of the pressure in the first
extra set, by outshooting the Eagles by a 3-2 margin, but neither
team could net the game-winner, pushing things to a second
overtime.
From the onset of the second extra session, Bridgewater peppered
Wilson goalie Nikol Grafnetterova with a barrage of shots, but the
keeper continued to deny the Eagles until Kalah Hess netted the
game-winner at the 96:56 mark to give BC the 2-1 victory.
BC outshot Wilson by an astounding 27-7 margin, and more than
doubled the Phoenix in penalty corners by a 13-6 tally, but a
mixture of rock solid Wilson goaltending and missed BC
opportunities allowed Wilson to stay alive.
Jennifer Bateman and Brianna Jacques led the Eagles with five
shots a piece, with Hess chipping in an additional four shots.
In the cage, Taylor Waddell (2-2) recorded five saves to pick up
the victory.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when Sweet
Briar comes to town for a 4:30 p.m. showdown at Mapp Field.
