Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College snapped
its six-game losing streak Wednesday night by pulling away in the
second half for an 80-62 victory over the Roanoke College Maroons
in ODAC action at Nininger Hall.
The first half was an offensive shootout with the Eagles holding
a two-point, 46-44, lead at the half.
The Maroons broke on top early and led by as many as 13 points
in the first half. Roanoke shot 57 percent in the first half,
including a sizzling 8-for-11 from beyond the arc, and led 40-27,
with 6:00 left in the first half.
The Eagles also shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes,
making 48.6 percent from the floor, including 6-for-11 from 3-point
range.
Senior Dominic Trawick led BC's first half comeback with 19
points before the break to pace the Eagles to a 46-44 halftime
lead. The Eagles outscored the Maroons 19-4 over the final six
minutes of the first half.
The second half was an entirely different story as Bridgewater's
defense controlled play, holding the Maroons to just 18 second-half
points on 22.2 percent shooting.
"If we're going to win games we need to hang out hats on the
defensive end," Bridgewater head coach Don Burgess said. "Tonight
in the second half, the guys showed they can defend by playing hard
and playing smart. They have been playing hard, but in those last
20 minutes they also played smart."
The score was tied 53-53 with 11:22 left in the game, but the
Eagles then went on a 10-1 run, capped by Jake Johnson's 3-pointer,
to take a 10-point, 64-54 lead with 7:14 to play.
Trawick cooled off for much of the second half, but fellow
senior Johnson picked up the scoring load.
Trawick finished with 29 points and a game-high 12 rebounds
while Johnson added 20 points.
"That's Dom's best all-around game of the season," said Burgess.
"Jake Johnson stepped up and freshmen Kordero Thompson and Lyndon
Humphries gave us some really good minutes."
For the Maroons, Logan Singleton and Melvin Felix each scored 14
points.
Bridgewater is now 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC while the
Maroons fall to 5-9, 2-3 in conference play.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon when they
Hampden-Sydney. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
