Eagles Hold On Down The Stretch To Defeat E&H, 94-88

Box Score

EMORY, Va. - Bridgewater College used a late 7-0 run to gain control of the game and held on down the stretch to defeat Emory & Henry, 94-88, Wednesday night in ODAC men's basketball action.

The Wasps shot 53 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range to lead after a high-scoring first half, 44-42.

"The first half, Emory & Henry's shooter were on fire," Bridgewater head coach Don Burgess said. "They opened up a little lead on us, but our guys showed some fight late in the half and cut the lead down to two. That was key for us going into the break."

Bridgewater grabbed the lead for good with a late 7-0 run to take an 89-80 lead with just more than two minutes left to play in the game.

After a jumper by the Emory & Henry's Jordan Short cut Bridgewater's lead to 82-80, the Eagles embarked on their decisive run. Freshman point guard Joey Geary scored on a layup and a Mark Gibbs layup following an E&H turnover gave the Eagles an 86-80 lead. Dominic Trawick then knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Eagles on top by nine.

J.D. Dyson answered with eight quick points to make it a one-possession game. Dyson hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six before two foul shots by Geary made the score 91-83. Dyson hit another three and then added two free throws to shave the margin to three, 91-88, with 1:04 left.

Trawick scored with 29 seconds to put the lead back to five and Cody Griffith hit 1-of-2 foul shots with 19 seconds left for the game's final point.

Trawick led four Eagles in double figures with 20 points, his sixth straight game with at least 20. Jake Johnson scored 19 followed by Justin Brake with 12, all in the first half, and Segar Jordan with 11. The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort as the team received 28 points off the bench.

"Coming down here, our student assistant Matty Ross asked me who I thought might have a big game," Burgess said. "I told him with the style of game that was going to be played, I thought Justin Brake might have a break-out game and he really played well, especially in the first half.

"A coach always loves to see guys come off the bench and contribute and just like our win over Eastern Mennonite, we got positive contributions from a lot of different people. Dom's 20 points were a hard-earned 20 and Jake had another good offensive game for us. And, how about Segar's effort with a double-double. This was a big conference win for on the road."

Dyson led the Wasps with a game-high 28 points.

The Eagles held a dominating 52-30 edge on the glass with Jordan completing a double-double with 11 boards. Trawick added eight rebounds for BC.

With the victory, Bridgewater reached the .500 mark in the ODAC at 5-5. The Eagles are 7-9 overall. E&H dropped to 2-17 overall and remained winless in the conference at 0-10.
