Maloney's Jumper Lifts Eagles To 84-83 Victory Over York

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A jumper by Rick Maloney (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd Kellam) with six seconds left lifted Bridgewater College to an 84-83 win Saturday over York (N.Y.) College in the consolation game of the Point Plaza Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.

The Eagles led by six, 80-74, on a layup by Maloney with 2:30 left ot play, bit York scored the next six points to tie the score for the 12th and final time with 55 seconds left to play.

Bridgewater took a two-point lead on a layup by Ronnie Thomas (Roanoke Va./Patrick Henry) with 47 second left, but a free throw by York's Marcel Esonwune made it a one-point game with 37 seconds remaining. Esonwune missed the second free throw, but York controlled the offensive rebound. Following a timeout, Esonune scored to give York a one-point lead, 83-82 with 12 seconds left.

Maloney then took a pass from Rashad Moore (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) and knocked down the game-winning shot with six ticks left. York's Kevin Lausell missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Eagles picked up their second win of the season, 84-83.

"We drew up a play for Rick at the end and the guys executed well and Rick hit the shot," Bridgewater head coach Don Burgess said. "We were able to grind it out and make some plays at both ends when we needed to."

Cody Griffith (Pembroke, Va./Giles County) paced four Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Kyle Hammond (Bluefield, W.Va./Bluefield) scored 17 points, followed by Drew Maynard (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) with 13 and Moore with 11. Esonwune led York with 37 points and 12 rebounds.

"The York big man (Esonwune) was a monster. He's a legit All-American," Burgess said. "We had some guys really step up and play well. Cody had 18 points and five assists off the bench and that's the way we need him to play. Kyle played well and Drew Maynard had his best game of the season. Ronnie (Thomas) didn't score a lot but he caused a lot of havoc at the defensive end. This was a big team win for the guys."

Bridgewater got hammered on the boards by a 46-33 margin but the Eagles forced 21 turnovers to help overcome the rebounding deficit.

"We played four guards for a lot of the game with Kyle playing at the four spot," Burgess said. "We had trouble rebounding with the small lineup, but our quickness caused them a lot of problems."

The Eagles, now 2-4 on the season, return to action Thursday night when they host Randolph College in Bridgewater's ODAC opener.
