BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater (9-14, 6-10
ODAC) overcame poor shooting early on and had a chance to force
overtime in the final seconds, but a Kyle Hammond trey clanged off
the rim as the Eagles fell to visiting Lynchburg by a 72-69 tally
on Senior Day.
Bridgewater came out ice cold from the field missing its first
seven shots before a Cody Griffith three ended the cold streak and
cut the Lynchburg (11-14, 6-10 ODAC) lead to 13-7 with 14:36 to
play in the opening half.
Lynchburg built its lead to as high as 10, before a 6-0
Bridgewater run got the Eagles to within a 21-17 tally.
Following the Eagles spurt, the Hornets responded with a 7-0 run
to bump its lead to a 28-17 score with seven and change to play.
Bridgewater outpaced Lynchburg by five points over the final
seven minutes of the opening stanza, but it was the Hornets leading
at halftime by a 41-35 tally.
Griffith led the way for the Eagles in the first half with nine
points, all from beyond the arc.
Following the intermission, Bridgewater netted the first five
points of the second half to chip the Lynchburg lead down to a
41-40 advantage before an 8-1 Hornets run put Lynchburg ahead by
eight with 14:48 to play.
Bridgewater responded when a Kyle Hammond trey kicked off a 9-0
BC spurt to knot the game up at 49 all with 12:56 to play.
For the next three minutes, the two teams traded baskets, before
BC knotted the game back up at 54 apiece with 9:26 remaining off of
a Dominic Trawick three.
Bridgewater took its first lead of the game with 8:06 to play
when senior Segar Jordan netted a three to give BC a 57-56
advantage.
The game would see-saw back and forth until an Austin Chillemi
layup gave the Hornets a four point advantage with 3:06 to play.
BC answered in a hurry with five straight points off a pair of
Jake Johnson free throws and a Trawick trey to take a 70-69 lead
with 61 ticks to play.
After a K.C. Mendez jumper gave Lynchburg the lead and a
Griffith jumper missed at the other end, BC was forced to foul with
19 seconds remaining.
Lynchburg's Steven Nichols converted both free throws to put
Bridgewater at a 72-69 deficit.
Bridgewater missed a jumper at the other end and immediately
fouled to send Mendez to the line with nine ticks remaining. Jordan
pulled down the rebound for BC after Mendez missed the front end of
a one and one to give the Eagles one final opportunity.
Off the in-bounds, the Eagles used a screen and roll to get
Hammond open on the near wing, but the junior's three-pointer
clanged off the rim, allowing the Hornets to escape with a 72-69
victory in Nininger Hall.
Trawick led all scorers 23 points after a cold start. The senior
went 9-of-11 from the stripe on the afternoon in his final regular
season home contest.
Jordan chipped in an additional 10 for the Eagles, while leading
the squad on the glass with nine boards, just missing the
double-double.
Lynchburg was led by a 20 point outing from Nate Campbell.
Echols also chipped in 14 for the Hornets to go along with 11 from
Chillemi.
On the glass, a trio of Hornets led the team with six boards a
piece.
Bridgewater out-rebounded Lynchburg by a slim 41-to-39 margin,
despite being outscored in the paint by a 38-to-16 gap.
Before the game, Bridgewater honored its four seniors: Johnson,
Jordan, Trawick and student-assistant Matt Ross.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when the squad hosts
the first round of the ODAC tournament against a team that has yet
to be determined. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. with tickets
available on a first come-first serve basis at the door.
